seekwhence Posted January 14, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here is an interesting Leica related image from WW2 I have in my archive. It shows a German Army Chaplain taking a picture of himself in a mirror using a Leica II. seekwhence

iphoenix Posted January 14, 2011 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2011 Can this person be identified? There is the possibility you could have a photograph of value to a Historian.
seekwhence Posted January 14, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted January 14, 2011 The name of chaplain in the image is known to me. I acquired the slide/negative archive he made during the war with the camera he is seen with (with some of the images being in color). I also have many documents pertaining to him. Sadly, I was not able to get the Leica also. seekwhence
WestMichigan Posted January 14, 2011 Share #4 Posted January 14, 2011 Thank You for sharing this image. All to often historical or classic items become disconnected from the Context of Their Age. While there is tinge of sorrow seeing the 'regalia' which are a constituent part of his "uniform" (not sure of the proper term) - to not see images which include such symbols and markings would be a Historical Dishonesty in my mind. It's a quite complex topic and field, to the best of my understanding anyway, it's supposed to be a fraught field for historians and archivists to cope with. In the image you've shared I predominantly see a Human Being performing the Human Act of Documenting his life - maybe it was for his Family, a Wife or Girlfriend, maybe his Mom... maybe for some negative psychological reason covered up by the stillness required by the long shutter speeds endemic to images in such situations and circumstances. Who can really know 'just' from a single photograph. Sincerely R in Mi
