Unrealistic Expectations??

Come to think of it the X1 though pricey as a compact if you look at its innards it has the same sensor as say my D300

X1 will not seem pricey if Leica made it twice as big and created a heavy lens. Never mind that a bigger X1 would give the same IQ as a smaller one. Just because X1 is compact, it seems pricey. Never mind the IQ that is miles ahead of any other compact.

I think one of the reasons I bought the X1 was that it carried on the tradition of Leica's individual looks. Its a great camera that has great IQ!

Sure, it may take a while to focus sometimes ( maybe another second longer!) but how many admiring glances do you get while you stand there till the square goes green? Its a good conversation starter!

I pay a premium price for that and the fact that Leica is a relatively small manufacturer. If you liken them to the car industry, there are a lot of small car manufacturers that make expensive small run cars. These cars are good, even excellent, but the large manufacturers with seemingly limitless funds probably make a technologically better car at a lower price.

The problem is, these cars all look the same and perform similarly.

Why would anyone buy a Morgan? They sell a Sport version with a 1.6 litre engine for almost £30,000. It hasnt even got electric windows! It still sells well though

Why? Exclusivity.

Thats what I see when I hold my X1. I knew what I was buying when I bought it. Sure, it would be great if it performs a bit better in the future with a firmware update, but I am not desperate for that and it wasnt a deal breaker.

Some of the bad comments I have seen about the X1 are frankly ridiculous. Someone complained because it didnt have an f2 lens, someone else complained that it wasnt ideal for portrait shots!

A lot of people are talking about the X100 from Fuji coming out soon. They are probably aiming at taking away potential Leica buyers. It doesnt look like a Fuji, maybe a good thing as I dont think they have a corporate identity, but it does look like an old Zorki 6 though and it follows the long Japanese tradition of selling look-a-like goods. It will probably be a great camera, but its not a Leica.

I still havent found anything about the X1 I dont like, in fact, I like it more now I have owned it a week.

If what you want is exclusivity and admiring glances then that's fine.

Of course it's not going to be a Leica, so maybe not exclusive enough for some.

Just in response about the slow AF. If you want to see slow and bad AF. Get the Sigma DP series which has the same size sensor. They released many firmware updates that increased the speed but it still had trouble focusing on a lot of subjects. I never used the camera with AF. It's one of the slowest cameras I've ever used but the pictures were always rewarding.

To me the X1's AF after using the Sigma's is a god send. No complaints here.

Also, the Fuji X100 looks good on paper but I have many doubts that this thing will even come close to the quality of the X1. I haven't seen anything come out of Fuji in recent years that produce good pictures. Maybe I'll eat my words when they finally release the camera and get some sample shots but all I see in the X100 is a camera that is just dressed for the part.

Which cameras have you seen results from?

Ah, forgot the Fujica, I was thinking of their more current ranges. Point taken

A saga.

She bought it for me. (She did not smile - $)

She gave it to me (She smiled)

I took it from her (I smiled)

I used it (I did not smile)

I gave it to her (She did not smile)

She took it from me (She smiled)

She took it back (She smiled and smiled and smiled)

We're living happily ever after.
