denoir Posted January 15, 2011 Share #85 Posted January 15, 2011 If the camera was stolen out of a car, wouldn't the auto insurance pay at least part of the value of the camera and lens? Definitely not. Even a camera insurance may not cover it if you for instance left the camera in the car overnight. In respect to insurance, at least in the US, I insure $24k of equipment for about $250 per year as an rider on my homeowners- as well as all of my wife's jewelry. I have inquired considerably with my insurer and on one occasion while traveling abroad have had to utilize it- no problem. Those are very good conditions. The cheapest here in Sweden is about 5% of the value and covers the Nordic countries. If you travel abroad you notify them and ask them to temporarily extend the insurance and specify which equipment you are going to bring and how much it is valued. There are different rates for Europe (minus Nordic countries) and Rest of the World. The extension not very expensive, at least not for shorter trips. dorukt Posted January 15, 2011 Author Share #86 Posted January 15, 2011 I spoke with a few insurance agencies and no one of them insure cameras in turkey. The only way to insure your camera is buying a homeowner policy.

tdtaylor Posted January 19, 2011 Share #88 Posted January 19, 2011 I spoke with a few insurance agencies and no one of them insure cameras in turkey. The only way to insure your camera is buying a homeowner policy. Just happened that my insurance renews on the 20th, and in speaking to my rep, my equipment is covered in all overseas area (including Turkey), whether left in the car or stolen/broken otherwise. But you are correct- it is part of a Homeowner's policy. Encompass, who my insurance is through, does not offer a policy just for cameras for personal use. I didn't get into it, but she said their is business insurance available.
johnbuckley Posted January 20, 2011 Share #89 Posted January 20, 2011 Dorukt - what I propose may be very unpopular with M9 Forum members, as it could set a precedent and be abused, but I nonetheless offer the following, because you are a student and I believe you when you say you fear this could be your last Leica. If it is possible for PayPal or some other means to be used to raise the money so you could replace your M9 and 50mm lens, I would be happy to contribute the first $50.00. I would say I would only contribute that amount once we had a sufficient amount of money raised to buy you at least the camera. But if we can get pledges adding up to $7000, I'll throw in $50. To Forum members -- sorry if offer offends you, but I am moved by his plight. And if this does not offend you, and you can afford to come to Dorukt's assistance, let's figure out how to help get him a new camera. JB
dorukt Posted January 20, 2011 Author Share #90 Posted January 20, 2011 Thank you so much John. I could easily say that nobody has offered me this kind of help in my life before. I bought my leica during my 4 month of internship in Dubai, UAE. It was a paid internship and i was earning about $2000+ a few hundred as plus per month. I did not hesitate to spend a few thousands on my gear while earning this amount of salary. But I live in Turkey, the country where the minimum wage is 630TL after taxes ($400 approx). Now it becomes really really hard to buy a new gear for me. Most people do consider the people who own a Leica m9 to be rich. But seriously, I'm in 2nd year in college and I have a part time job and earning like around 500TL ($320 approx.) per month and got a scholarship which gives me 250TL ($160) per month. I am also running a city wiki , (istanbulwiki.org) a non profit project about Istanbul, and server costs us $174 per month and I pay half of cost. That's why I will be unable to buy a new one while being in this situation.
wattsy Posted January 20, 2011 Share #91 Posted January 20, 2011 A generous offer John but I'm not sure it'll be easy to find another 139 like-minded souls to raise the $7K. After all, it is not as if the OP needs an M9 to resume his interest in photography. There are plenty of cheaper alternatives that many decent photographers make do with. Still, if you want to get something organised kickstarter.com is a good way of raising funds for this kind of thing.
italy74 Posted January 20, 2011 Share #92 Posted January 20, 2011 Ciao Dorukt first of all, you have my sympathies it's indeed a "heavy loss" such combo... I have a question for you, I hope it doesn't sound kind of offensive.. Along the thread I lost WHEN you got that camera in Dubai and when you came back home. For sure you will have showed to your friends and will have told them how lucky you were and how expensive it would have been otherwise. It was your car or a friend's one ? Would you say you're "wealthier than average Turkish?" I mean, is it possible that for one reason already known (you're wealthy and maybe you have a nice car) OR you talked with your friends (and they talked - even unconsciously with someone else about you) the thief became aware of what you had there ? Maybe the police could tell you if other robberies were done or tried that night in the parking place where you were. In the positive case, you would have "only" be unlucky: 10 robberies and one of them it was you. But if noone else was robbed that evening in the nearby, I'm prone to say that someone knew about your camera so, either you or one of your friend talked (again: unconsciously) .. You might ask them, at least. The same facts you got a M9 + lens (even if used) in Dubai (a place known here for rich people holidays) - and you told this to others for sure - might have biased someone from the wrong side. Just for the files, once I tried to ensure my gear here (at the time I had also a remarkable amount of lenses) but there were no insurance companies doing that and the only one who did was so expensive that their agent himself adviced me not to do unless I was really sure (i.e. I had a steady income from them)
sfage Posted January 20, 2011 Share #93 Posted January 20, 2011 I'm sorry man. When I read the title of this thread, it almost felt like a death in the family. Get those serial numbers out to everyone as soon as possible.
Mark2 Posted January 20, 2011 Share #94 Posted January 20, 2011 um... he had an M9 stolen. an M9 *is* full frame and it was a new camera. if you have any Leicas you are wanting to lose, i am sure i can help you with that. i know somebody dying for a rangefinder that can't afford it... then you can buy one of your new DSLRs and everyone will be happy Seriously there are much cheaper alternatives. The nikon D7000 is amazing. It only cost a paltry sum of USD 2200 with a good lens. Not only that you can do so many things. The white balance is much better than the leica. The IQ is better. Indoor shots seems to be better. The leica lens maybe sharp, but there are better use with the money. If I am your age, I would buy a simple SLR camera, use the balance of the money to go after girls. When u start working the leica lens are always there for you to buy. These can wait but not the girls.

No, it was friends car, borrowed for a few hours. No, I'm not wealthier than average turkish, and i don't even look like wealthier lol. Of course I showed my gear to friends and I'm sure %95 of them were not aware of its real price due to its retro look and simplicity and did not tell them what i paid for the camera cuz i don't like kind of talking like this one. According to Kadikoy Police Department, there was not any other robbery done in parking place at that night. The police told me that this kind of robbery (using jammers) is still very rare. And I had look at camera records 5 days ago in the police department and thieves were two persons a man in black suit and woman. I'm sure they did not know that there is a leica in the backpack. Maybe they expect there was cell phone, a few hundred of turkish liras, laptop?

coup de foudre Posted January 21, 2011 Share #99 Posted January 21, 2011 I do like to meet a man who likes to live dangerously... despite the fact that he neglected to put in a winking emoticon, i'd like to believe it was all in good fun. you have to be a little thick-skinned when you're a female photographer... especially when your name is androgynous (it really is just "cam") and people are surprised when they meet you that you're actually a girl
