Advertisement Posted January 12, 2011 Posted January 12, 2011 Hi adamli629, Take a look here My Leica M9 got stolen. :((((. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest nafpie Posted January 12, 2011 Share #62 Posted January 12, 2011 well.. I've decided to not make SN public for now. My Leica was a 2nd hand, bought from a local guy in Dubai and still not recorded in Leica site. Makes it hard and harder to believe your story. However, to leave such a camera in a car is carelessness, nothing else. Stefan
tdtaylor Posted January 13, 2011 Share #63 Posted January 13, 2011 In respect to insurance, at least in the US, I insure $24k of equipment for about $250 per year as an rider on my homeowners- as well as all of my wife's jewelry. I have inquired considerably with my insurer and on one occasion while traveling abroad have had to utilize it- no problem. On my insurance, which is typical here, an photo item is covered up to $1,500 anywhere, whether by my stupidity or other. Above that amount, it needs to be specifically added to my insurance as a rider. If it is added, it is covered anywhere as stated above. If no rider, it is only covered if stolen from my insured residence. Considering most of us don't take the majority of our photos at home, this is recommended. Note that I do have homeowners with full replacement and full replacement plus on the contents, so it is a fairly premium policy, but not abnormal. It happens my brother-in-law handles my coverage, but I still read the entire, boring policy- and learned a lot. From my experiences with my businesses and personal life, I can tell you policies do differ, especially in the dozens of referenced attachments. I also provide my insurer with a photographic file with costs and serial numbers, as well as pictures of jewelry and appraisals at renewal time. After the first time, it is easy to update. jan_brittenson Posted January 13, 2011 Share #64 Posted January 13, 2011 There's also different homeowners' policies and they vary a lot. When we condoized our two-unit building we changed insurance policies - obviously, since the CA insures common areas while unit owners insure their units and possessions. Even with the same underwriter the policy is completely different; while the "building owner's" policy focuses on the building with limited coverage of possessions, the condo policy is mainly about possessions and accidental damage (water, fire, dropped a chainsaw on the 1916 Edwardian hardwood floors or staircase, etc). ALL our possessions are covered, with no exceptions made, up to the limit. Doesn't matter if it's clothes, computers, jewelry, or if they simply steal our rugs. Or a rug disappears at the cleaner. Or I drop my M9 off a boat into the Mekong. Covered. A ***much*** better policy. The CA policy is also better in its coverage of liability. Total paid is about the same for the two units, or slightly more (we upped the coverage since it's actually useful).
Mark2 Posted January 13, 2011 Share #65 Posted January 13, 2011 This can be good news if you think positively. This is the chance for you to buy a new camera. Frankly the canon EOS5D mark 2 takes as good pictures and is full frame. Not only that there are so many things u can do with it that leica m9 cannot do. Forget leica and buy a canon or a nikon D7000. I have all of them and I feel the difference is very small. The lieca x1 is also a good choice. Sometimes I wish I lose my cameras as well so that I have more excuse to buy a new one

It was a great day when I could replace my fat Canon for an M8, even if I could take refuge in the Digilux2. Nothing against Nikanon, especially for professional use, but the fun is with Leica imo. Where DID you find the serial number? I went to File>file info>camera data 1 (camera data 2) and got every other bit of info EXCEPT the serial number. "Advanced" wasn't very helpful either. coup de foudre Posted January 13, 2011 Share #74 Posted January 13, 2011 I only found it under Advanced in PS CS4, as shown in the screen grab in my post #21. ooh! thank you! i am still on CS3 and just checked out a JPEG (i shoot both because i process RAW but like to see b/w if i check the screen)... no serial number, but a UniqueImageID which shows the actual number of shots that have been taken on the camera (no having to figure out Hex conversion any more). it was interesting to me because i bought my camera used (an ex-demo from a dealer) -- now i know that only 302 shots had been taken on the camera before i bought it again, many thanks! martha Posted January 13, 2011 Share #75 Posted January 13, 2011 On PC use the PhotoMe Exif reader/editor (freeware) Thanks, Jaapv. I'll try that--just curious, as I really only own one Leica M8.2. (It does occur to me that perhaps only the M9 records the serial number in Exif, in which case my search will be futile.)
martha Posted January 13, 2011 Share #76 Posted January 13, 2011 Thanks, Jaapv. I'll try that--just curious, as I really only own one Leica M8.2. (It does occur to me that perhaps only the M9 records the serial number in Exif, in which case my search will be futile.) FYI: successfully downloaded the PhotoMeExif (beta) version and yes, as Jaapv said, the Exif data from my M8.2 includes the serial number. I'm not sure if I will keep the free download on my PC or not, as too much information sometimes is a burden. Interesting concept, however, and I thought I would pass it along. Sorry for the loss of your camera and lens--hope they're recoverable for you. --martha

Sometimes I wish I lose my cameras as well so that I have more excuse to buy a new one thanks for your support. i really do love leica way of shooting, i do not need tons of features like liveview, electronic viewfinder, video recording, gps, autofocus. i liked its simplicity and its looks. I love shooting people without getting their attention. I know leica is expensive and yet it is worth every $$. ( i bet i got mine for very cheap. lucky?) once you start shooting with Leica you will never want to go back to dslr.

Just checked my policy with Encompass, and my policy covers international loss. The only exclusion for international coverage is Fine Art, which is limited to the US and Canada. Coverage is replacement cost, or the value listed on the policy. I travel abroad fairly often and wanted to make sure it was covered. If your company doesn't provide this, I would keep checking other companies. By the way, this is where a good insurance agent is helpful, as well as in the business scenario. pelagia Posted January 14, 2011 Share #79 Posted January 14, 2011 May I remind you that there is a special little software by Wolfram Söns named M9Info, which shows the SN as well. Wow! Say it ain't so, Coup de foudre. You mean that I don't have to rely on higher math to figure out how many actuations, that the "UniqueImageID" is good old base 10. Yippee! Sorry again to the gentleman in Istanbul. Your misfortune has revealed valuable information (insurance, data recovery, where to look for stolen items) to some of us on this Forum. Thank you and I DO sincerely hope that you recover your cherished M9 and lens. --martha
