albertknappmd Posted January 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted January 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just received my black leather Luigi Crescenzi case for the S2. It fits perfectly and has a screw at the bottom that allows a RRS B9 rapid release clamp to be inserted. Cheers, Albert

c6gowin Posted January 9, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 9, 2011 Albert, How long have you had the CS lens? I didn't think they were shipping yet. The Luigi case looks to be very well done.
albertknappmd Posted January 9, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted January 9, 2011 Luigi took the photograph and both the camera and the lens are dummies... My overall impression of the case is extremely positive. Very well fiting and beautifully made.. I have bought Luigi cases for my M7s, M8 as well as R8-9 and DMRs. The Ms are masterpieces as were the R8-9 but the DMR was "a good effort".. The S2 is another masterpiece. I always get the DETACHABLE back as opposed to the partialy detachable back pictured here. I also have Luigi put in a screw that it anchored to a piece of solid aluminum in the floor of the case. The screw used to connect to the camera but Luigi figured out a way to avoid this and this makes removal of the case alot faster. The female screw is 1/2" which is fine for a Kirk or RRS fast release. In addition, I have learned to use a piece of dental dam between the case and teh fast release in order to prevent slippage.. I have NEVER had the problem! Thanks to Peter for posting.. I am off to the Antarctic with the S2 in two weeks and will post upon my return.. Cheers, Albert :)
c6gowin Posted January 9, 2011 Share #10 Posted January 9, 2011 Thank you for the reply and more detailed information about the Luigi case. Enjoy your trip to Anartica. It should be awesome and the S2 has been doing very well in cold wet weather based on my experience and others. I look forward to your post upon return. GMB Posted January 10, 2011 Share #12 Posted January 10, 2011 I shot with the camera this summer and, frankly, the last thing this great camera needs is a half case. The camera is quite bit but ok for normal to large hands; with the half case I think it will be much less easy to hold. The half case also blocks the rear button that is programmable for AF or EV lock, and when you shoot you have the leather ledge at the the rear hanging down or the rear screen and the 4 control buttons are blocked. And I do not even want to imagine the hassle to change cards. And while I think these leather half cases look cool on a M9, for my taste they are out of place on the S2. Anyway, this is my personal view and I hope you take no offense (as you know, there is no point in disputes about taste) but for for me this leather case makes no sense. Better get a good hand or wrist strap. Anyway, enjoy your trim to Antarctica and post some results when you are back.
Constable Posted January 11, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 11, 2011 I tend to agree about there being no need for a case in normal conditions .... But in the Antarctic? Probably more important is to replace the pathetically inadequate strap by something more robust and more comfortable. I use a Tamrac Boomerang that also carries two spare cards. Why is it that Leica can make such superb cameras but fall down on the trivial aspects like lense caps and camera straps. When I have time I will start a thread on the 120 Macro design errors that means you have to remove the lense cap before switching the camera on .... But I get so annoyed about this I will wait until the karma is good Ed
dfarkas Posted January 11, 2011 Share #14 Posted January 11, 2011 When I have time I will start a thread on the 120 Macro design errors that means you have to remove the lense cap before switching the camera on .... But I get so annoyed about this I will wait until the karma is good Ed Ed, The first 120mm lenses accidentally shipped with 82mm lens caps. Due to the normal start up process, the lens moves and re-finds its home focus position. If the 82mm cap is mounted, it pops off. The correct 72mm lens cap is now included with the lens. It doesn't pop off. If you have a 120mm, I'm sure Leica or your dealer would be happy to get you a 72mm lens cap to replace the 82mm one. sunil Posted January 12, 2011 Share #16 Posted January 12, 2011 I just received my black leather Luigi Crescenzi case for the S2. It fits perfectly and has a screw at the bottom that allows a RRS B9 rapid release clamp to be inserted. Cheers, Albert Just for my edification, what purpose does the case for the S2 serve? I thought the S2 was designed to be weather proof which basically eliminates the need for the case. However, I suspect it will prevent dings and other peripheral nicks but the bigger size would make it a brute to hold in my little hands. Just curious if you had a specific need in mind for the case. albertknappmd Posted January 12, 2011 Author Share #17 Posted January 12, 2011 As to GMB's points- 1. The prototype halfcase was made on a dummy that did NOT HAVE the AF/AE lock on it! Luckily, my halfcase only slightly overlaps the AF/AE button and minimal pressure on the halfcase readily depresses the AF/AE button. 2. My halfcase has a completely detachable rear component. I agree that the prototype's non-detachable rear piece is impractical and Luigi knows this. However, a fair number of M fans keep ordering it attached. Go figure! 3. The halfcases protect the camera (M, R and now S) from the usual dings etc but are so beautifully made that they complement the ergonomics. As to changing the battery or flashcards, the case comes off readily and effortlessly. That is the beauty of the design... Albert:):)

Albert:):) The problem I have with this case's design, and of course I am only going by the images you have posted, is that having handled the S2 for a day, I find it's ergonomics quite lovely. The case seems to add additional bulk to the camera and significantly alters the beaufiful lines of the camera. For my hands (medium-small), I think that case will add additional bulk that will detract from the "glove like" feel of the camera's grip. I also notice that the leather of the case covers the "thumb recess" at the rear of the camera body. I suspect that for photographers with large hands this case might not be a problem. Also, I think this leatther case would look better presented in black. Do they do a black version. And how much do these cases cost? Additionally, does the case have a top half/cover so as to give the camera body complete coverage? I do have a weakness for leather goods so I guess, I would be inclined to buy this case solely for the purpose of protecting the body whilst in transit. Thanks in advance. albertknappmd Posted January 18, 2011 Author Share #19 Posted January 18, 2011 Also, I think this leatther case would look better presented in black. Do they do a black version. And how much do these cases cost? My case is black and I agree with you completely... The case with the special screw in the bottom for the rapid release and strap was about 300 Euros. Additionally, does the case have a top half/cover so as to give the camera body complete coverage? Luigi can make a FULL case as opposed to a half case... I have been using the case for the past few weeks and as the leather breaks in (think baseball mitt) the case really molds to the S2. By the way, when I was talking of a full case, what I meant was a case where the top half can be removed completely just leaving the botton half as in the pictures you have provided ( did I make myself clear in my original post/question? sorry if I didn't). And do these folks have a website link you can provide? Thanks in advance.
