jplomley Posted December 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just finished my first portfolio for viewing on the iPad using the app FolioBook. This app offers plenty of control for sorting as well as playback features for dissolves and transition times. The iPad has more than enough resolution and being a back-lit medium, images are reminiscent of looking at trannies on a light box. Huge wow factor. I highly recommend this app for photogs that travel with their iPad and want to have several portfolios available for show. http://www.foliobook.mobi/
Advertisement Posted December 31, 2010 Posted December 31, 2010 Hi jplomley, Take a look here iPad and FolioBook. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
a.j.z Posted December 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 31, 2010 I tried it due to this recommendation but I cannot recommend it. Nixe idea but - adding and deleting of photos is not comfortable. The previews are way to small and editing is difficult - the program crashes frequently (other than the other Apps I have) and I just lost the pictures I added in the last half hour If they sell a beta version they should mention it. ramosa Posted December 31, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 31, 2010 I need to figure out something in this regard. I haven't moved photos over to my iPad yet, but can see some benefit in it. I wonder what the best options are, etc.
jplomley Posted December 31, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted December 31, 2010 Andreas, I'm sorry to hear of your experience. I had none of these issues. The app has worked seamlessly for me, and in fact just showed my portfolio to about half a dozen photogs and everything ran smoother than a babies bottom. I assume you added the images either through iTunes or DropBox? My largest portfolio was 88 images and they all transitioned perfectly. I saved all images as JPEGS with maximum image quality, sized to 1024 pxl on the long side. File size was about 0.5MB. I would contact FolioBook and either ask for a refund or for Tech Support. Just one other thought, did you enable Location in your iPad settings?
sanyasi Posted January 1, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 1, 2011 I took a look at their webpage and am still unclear about one thing: Are you able to load photos from your camera or SD card (using the Camera Connection kit), or is loading only from your computer? Thanks Jack Siegel January 1, 2011
jplomley Posted January 1, 2011 Author Share #6 Posted January 1, 2011 AFAIK Jack, only from the computer. Andreas, playing around last evening, I believe you can organize the images in the order you want by creating an album in iPhoto and then syncing to that album in iTunes. I will confirm today as I will be loading another portfolio. This should alleviate your frustration of having to reorganize images on the iPad. jplomley Posted January 1, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted January 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Andreas, confirmed re: iPhoto. Just create an Album, add your images, click and drag to sort in the order you want. When you import them into FolioBook, this order is conserved. Hope this helps out. a.j.z Posted January 3, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 3, 2011 Andreas, confirmed re: iPhoto. Just create an Album, add your images, click and drag to sort in the order you want. I have around 13.000 photos on my iPad which might be the reason for the crashes.
a.j.z Posted January 3, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 3, 2011 Jeffry, I am lost a little bit. With iPhoto you mean the standard app on the iPad with which you can view the photos imported via iTunes? I cannot create an album there. Many thanks for your help!
jplomley Posted January 3, 2011 Author Share #10 Posted January 3, 2011 Andreas, I mean iPhoto which is shipped standard with every Mac computer. You can create albums within this App, and then when you sync your iPad, you can specify in iTune which albums you want copied from iPhoto to the iPad. Then in FolioBook you just load the entire album into your gallery. Just one other note, you are only allowed 100 images per gallery in FolioBook. I ended up having to split my Cuba portfolio into two separate galleries as a result.
a.j.z Posted January 3, 2011 Share #11 Posted January 3, 2011 I do not have a Mac but thanks, I think I know how to work around this.

Foliobook Posted January 4, 2011 Share #13 Posted January 4, 2011 Hi folks, I noticed the link to our site on the web stats its nice to see that someone has recommended our app. Please feel free if you have problems to use the email address on our support page and we'll try to help people fix things. The support page is at foliobook.mobi I would mention that generally if the app seems 'crashy', then its a good idea to fully reboot the iPad. the iPad seems not to reclaim memory terribly well so sometimes when Foliobook starts it gets less than the 20Mb or so of RAM it needs to play within. A reboot is recommended before showing the images in an important meeting etc. Another tip is that if there are problems loading images, just try adding a max of 10-20 per time and avoid adding folders in a single operation if they have more than about 20 in. If it looks like you can't add 10-20 images without problems... then its reboot time. Thanks to the original poster for the positive words, we are always working hard on the app and will continue improving it in 2011. We will soon be providing better support for images loaded through the camera kit, currently we don't support autorotation of images but will in the next couple of releases.
