I got myself the D-lux 5 a few days ago and its been pretty good so far. I still have much to learn though. Do you guys know of any sites or books that can teach me a thing or two about photography with the D-Lux 5?
Advertisement Posted January 11, 2011 Posted January 11, 2011 Hi missmarvell, Take a look here Leica D-lux 5 vs Canon Eos60D. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
farnz Posted January 11, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 11, 2011 Alexander S. White published a book about the D-Lux 4 from a photographer's point of view that went so much further than the instruction manual with excellent examples and practical suggestions. I would highly recommend it for that camera. Unfortunately he hasn't published a similar book for the D-Lux 5 yet but he has published a similar book for the D-Lux 5's sister camera, the Panasonic DMC-LX5, and although I've only had the book for a few days it's as good as the D-Lux 4 book and I haven't found anything about the LX5 that's not the same with my D-Lux 5 so far. Pete. Thanks Pete for the tip. I found something I thought you might be interested in: Similar to the Leica D-Lux 4 guide, Alexander White just published his latest “Photographer’s guide to the Leica D-Lux 5″ book which is now available in PDF format (paperback will start shipping in the next few weeks). The price of the PDF file is $9.95 and can be purchased directly from whiteknightpress.com. farnz Posted January 12, 2011 Share #24 Posted January 12, 2011 Thanks, Miss Marvell, you've lived up to your name. The book's just appeared on Amazon UK so I've ordered a copy. (Any takers for a mint copy of Alexander S. White's Photographer's Guide to the LX3?) Pete.
farnz Posted January 21, 2011 Share #25 Posted January 21, 2011 A note about D-Lux 5 book: if you order it directly from White Knight Press (the publisher) then they include a pair of cardboard 3D glasses for viewing a 3D picture in the book. (I opened the book when it arrived this afternoon and the glasses fell out. My immediate thought was that someone had made a mistake until a paper slip later fell out of the book and explained that only books bought directly from the publisher include the 3D glasses. Not a 'biggy' perhaps but still ... ) Pete.
missmarvell Posted January 23, 2011 Author Share #26 Posted January 23, 2011 I'm pretty satisfied with the quality of the shots. Is the book any good Farnz?

Paul Reading Posted January 26, 2011 Share #28 Posted January 26, 2011 I don't understand why Leica don't include any remote software to allow you to shoot from a computer when connected. I believe that the Digilux 2 was the only camera that did, and I love it. As far as I know all the Canon G series come with remote software and it seems a big omission to me. macjim Posted January 26, 2011 Share #29 Posted January 26, 2011 Missmarvell, you might like to have a look, and join the Leica d-lux 5 group on flickr where you will see some fine photographs taken with this superb camera. I bought mine last December and I haven't regretted it, it goes everywhere with me and now my D90 stays in it's camera case at home! Oh, and my user name on flickr is: thesrpspaintshop. Cheers, Macjim.
ExistentialEye Posted February 5, 2011 Share #30 Posted February 5, 2011 If you learn to use the D-Lux 5 to its potential, you will quickly realize that the only limitation is the sensor size...and even then, at 1/1.63", it's significantly larger than the typical compact camera. The D-Lux 5 is a precision instrument and offers many of the control functions of its larger DSLR brethern (multiple automation modes, full manual controls, shutter speeds from a full minute to 1/4000 of a second, ability to shoot RAW images, etc. etc.) To see some truly inspirational photographs - and I do mean photographs - that were shot with the D-Lux 5's predecessor, the D-Lux 4, go here >> Leica D-Lux 4 Photography by Jim Radcliffe Those images should show you what the 5 is capable of...and silence the "it's just a P&S" crowd. Guest petemasty Posted February 13, 2011 Share #31 Posted February 13, 2011 I have had Canon bodies for some years including 1DsMk3, 5D Mk2 and various G series over the years.I bought the D-lux 5 two months ago and was astounded by it's quality for a compact. NO it is not the equal of a full frame Canon but it rips a G series to bits in image quality. If you know how, or learn how, to use a camera in manual mode you will get outstanding results. I am happy to print up to A2 from my D-Lux and as a result of the experience intend to chop all my Canon gear for an M9. Leica is a move you will not regret. Word for word i agree with the above comments. Recently got a DLux5 as it came with Lightroom. What a great camera!! Picture quality is fantastic and is just the right size for a compact, ie not so small it becomes fiddly. I have a Canon 7d with one L series lens and the 15-85mm lens whcih is highly regarded. After my DLux 5 experience I'm now seriously considering selling it all and getting the M9. I'm an image quality freak more than anything else and so have noot regretted getting the D Lux 5. I take it everywhere. I owned Pentax kit before i moved to Canon, so maybe a Pentax k10 or 20 with a few inexpensive Pentax manual prime lenses (which gives fantastic image quality). but start with the D Lux 5 if you want portability. farnz Posted February 13, 2011 Share #32 Posted February 13, 2011 W... After my DLux 5 experience I'm now seriously considering selling it all and getting the M9. ... A wonderful sentiment and I hope it works out for you but a word of caution. I don't know whether you have any experience of rangefinder photography but if you haven't then it would be a good idea to find out if it you like it before putting down a large mount of money for an M9 plus lens(es). I'm certainly not trying to put you off the M9 but some people just don't 'jell' with rangefinder photography and making the change based *just* on the strength of the excellent D-Lux 5's performance (which isn't a rangefinder camera) could lead to disappointment and cost you a lot of money. I urge you to, if you can, borrow an M8 or M9 from your dealer and spend a day or two getting to know it before pulling the pin. If your dealer can't or won't lend you a digital rangefinder and you don't know anyone else with an M8 or M9 then there are very cheap film rangefinders available that will give you some idea whether rangefinder photography is for you.
