businessasusual Posted June 23, 2011 Share #21 Posted June 23, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Personally I found a noticebale impact on my approach to photogrpahy by doing two things: a) reading about the lives of the world's most renowned photographers, including history of photography - it would the closest I would get to having known them looking at millions of images from both professional and amateur photographers. (I recall at school- they always taught us that one way to improve our spelling was to read A LOT - the images had that effect.) Recommended Reading: Dialogue With Photography - Interviews By Paul Hill & Thomas Cooper Magnum - Russell Hiller Amercian Photography & The American Dream - James Guimon (covers Dust Bowl and McCarthy era) Life Photographers - What They Saw - John Loengard Henri Cartier-Bresson & The Artless Art - Jean-Pierre Montier and lastly - anything covering The Principles Of Tao My interest in Photography has taught me more about life than photography itself and that is what gives life to photography. :)

stunsworth Posted June 23, 2011 Share #22 Posted June 23, 2011 Strongly agree, Neil, but harder to find than unobtainium. I've been trying to find a copy for more than 3 years There was a program about the photographer on TV a few weeks ago. I think on either Sky Arts or BBC4. Fascinating. FiZZ Posted July 3, 2011 Share #23 Posted July 3, 2011 The Mind's Eye by Monsieur Cartier-Bresson Why People Photograph by Robert Adams As for books on technique, then I recommend looking at picture books for the masters. Anything by Joel Meyerwitz, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winnogrand, and HCB. These guys all used Leicas so I find their work very relevant.
Twotone Posted July 3, 2011 Share #24 Posted July 3, 2011 I've just bought HCB's Scrapbook, The Americans and Looking In (Robert Frank) after reading recommendations for them in this thread and have to say that all three books are wonderful and are well worth the money. For £13 Robert Frank's The Americans is unbelievable value for money with some of the best photographs I've ever seen in my life. If you buy only one photographic book them buy this one, it's truly inspiring. Tony

Either that's a testament to the books, or that the teachers who are teaching are old farts who took this stuff in school. =P
