Advertisement Posted December 15, 2010 Posted December 15, 2010 Hi Hansel, Take a look here Optical and Digital Zoom. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted December 15, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 15, 2010 It's usually in the menu system. In the D-Lux 4, it's in the "REC" menu, item "DIGITAL ZOOM." Try it. You probably won't like it. On the Panasonic cameras, there's also an "Extra Optical Zoom" available. Very interesting idea, not at all detrimental to image quality (as digital zoom is). Its drawback is that it gives no advantage over using highest quality/resolution and cropping the image. IOW, interesting technology with little general usefulness. However, the "Extra Optical Zoom" is apparently the father of the very powerful video "Extra Tele Conversion" feature of the GH2, Sometimes There Really is a Free Lunch. John Thawley Posted December 15, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 15, 2010 Hi guys, I understand that I can activate optical zoom by using the dial near the shutter button. But how to I activate digital zoom? Thanks in advance Don't bother. It's not zooming at all. It's enlarging. Same picture, cropped with bigger pixels. So... in short, lower resolution. It's a fantastic selling feature.... if you buy your cameras at an appliance or big box store. JT
Digitom Posted December 15, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 15, 2010 I agree to JT. I also never see a sense in using that digital zooms, however the name is, it is really no zoom. Better to use "footzooming" (means: to walk) more near to your object of interest (if possible) Also I think it is better to make a "digital zoom" at home at the monitor - if one really need it. Because sure it is the same then using these non optical "zooms". But at home you can choose very careful from a good picture material, but if using these "enhanced zoom" during yout phototour, you get immidiately a less quality image!
