Piewacket Posted January 5, 2011 Author Share #21 Posted January 5, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) i agree, and i dont want to hijack this thread, i shoot my m8 in raw and do PP edits. however, i have not been happy with the same with my lx5. in fact im a little frustrated right now. i had an older pani dmc fz8 that i just grabbed and shot. we had two of them and recently decided to upgrade them. me with the lx 5, my field partner a g12. both of us are extremely dissappointed compared to the fz8. the images from that camera seemed to be better right out of the camera than our images after hours of PP from the lx5 and g12. i am struggling to figure out what i could possible be doing differently. my shots with the lx 5 seem not to be sharp, definition seems to be lost, not on all of my shots, but on enough to make me take a second look. and when compared to the fz8 the lx5 fails most of the time, especially if you use any zoom at all. again sorry if i hijacked this tread, and i understand that it is often the indian and not the bow. thx bmc Don't you also get a jpeg version with the raw? Or you can set it that way. If so maybe try processing the jpeg file and see how that works. I shot many of my images in snapshot mode, as it seemed very consistent and the manual controls I found a bit harder to get what I wanted cause there is not an immediate preview... I used them in a few cases. I did my last shoot with it yesterday, some fashion and was really happy with the results. The full post will be up Tuesday but here is one of the shots... Shot in jpeg, snapshot mode, processes in Lightroom and photoshop...
Advertisement Posted January 5, 2011 Posted January 5, 2011 Hi Piewacket, Take a look here Testing the D-Lux 5. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bmc Posted January 5, 2011 Share #22 Posted January 5, 2011 it can shoot both, i used to do that with my m8 and then went strictly to raw, so i never really tried it with the lx5. i am also using the camera much differently than you are. i basically photo journal our outings, then post the photos on my website. nobody expects the images to be print quality, and i am not a pro. however, i enjoy taking photos and i am trying to pursue it in a professional manner. equipment, technique, etc, but not for money. i am using it mainly in the fields, farmland, ranches and whatnot. i cant always control the time of day, or light when i use it. here are a few examples of what i shoot. lx5: vs. my m8 thanks again for your replies, they have answered my questions. look forward to your write up from the fashion shoot. farnz Posted January 5, 2011 Share #23 Posted January 5, 2011 BMC, The top two shots reveal haloing around objects in the foreground and the colours in the second shot look to be off. They're also very low resolution shots, c. 150 kB and 96 dpi so I think they're suffering from jpeg artifacting here (although they obviously won't in your full res raw version). I note that you've used Aperture to process these shots - could that have something to do with it? Pete.

Pete. oh please oh please tell me that is what it is. how did you know i was using aperture? maybe that is the key to it all. you are so right. the raw's look great on my machine, but look like crap when i post them or they convert to jpeg. to be honest, im new to PP (the last year or so) and i never thought of it. i figured that my skill level was low and that i would get better with time. why would aperture affect my images? or how could it. thanks for the info. farnz Posted January 6, 2011 Share #25 Posted January 6, 2011 ... how did you know i was using aperture? ... Because ... I'm right behind you watching everything you're doing on your computer! Hoo-hoo-hah-hah-hah!! Just kidding, Aperture's listed in the photo's EXIF data. ... why would aperture affect my images? or how could it. Different raw processors give different results, they treat raw files in different ways, there are a large number of different raw file formats so sometimes unexpected results occur. I'm using a pc so I've no knowledge of Aperture but there have been discussions on various forums about the differences between Capture One, Silkypix, Aperture, Lightroom, Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, GIMP etc. Aperture might not have anything to do with the disappointing results you're getting but when you think that the LX5's raw format is still quite new it may be that the latest version of Aperture may not yet have fully caught up with it - you are using the latest version of Aperture I presume? Just kidding, Aperture's listed in the photo's EXIF data. . a few years ago i would have believed that, and im not particularly old. i spend very little time indoors or on the computer, so this whole pp business is tough for me. i am using the latest aperture, i think ill try ps this year. thanks,
ho_co Posted January 7, 2011 Share #27 Posted January 7, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't know anything about Aperture, but I do know Photoshop has a long and steep learning curve. If you buy Photoshop, pay for a course at a local college to get you running. At least, that's what worked for me. Maybe your best bet is a book or video training on Aperture? Only my 2-cent opinion. I think you've got to find out what's making these pictures look that way before you go off and try to learn a program like Photoshop. What are you doing differently between the two cameras? You know the little one has a sensor smaller than your smallest finger-nail, right? So you know you can't enlarge from it as easily as you do from the M8. Looks as if something strange is going on with the sky in the first two shots--are you doing something there that you're not doing with the M8? Those are only questions that might help get you or someone else started; unfortunately, I don't know anything about Aperture. Good luck!
Piewacket Posted January 7, 2011 Author Share #28 Posted January 7, 2011 I am going hijack my own thread! I just learned of the discovery of an archive of amazing images by an unknown photographer, Vivian Maier. I posted a full feature on my blog today which includes an excellent piece on the story from Chicago Tonight. above are two of her self portraits. She shot almost every thing with a Rolleiflex. ho_co Posted January 7, 2011 Share #29 Posted January 7, 2011 Now we know why you dig the square format! Secret Rollei fetishist! (Like all true keepers of the flame.)
Piewacket Posted January 10, 2011 Author Share #30 Posted January 10, 2011 Now we know why you dig the square format! Secret Rollei fetishist! (Like all true keepers of the flame.) Actually it is a Hasselblad thing...that was my camera of choice for many years. I have never used a Rollie but I have drooled over a few I have stumbled on recently... Piewacket Posted January 11, 2011 Author Share #31 Posted January 11, 2011 My last d-lux 5 shoot went up today and it is my favorite. It was my only chance to really shoot a human while I had the camera. I would love to have shot some portraits with it too, next time I guess. There are three images shot with Leica, all others I used a lensbaby on a Canon 5D... I love this lens for fashion and I love the contrast of the soft focus images with the sharp delux pics.... I think it is maybe my favorite post ever...! Oh I have been asked to guest post on the Leica blog about my d-lux 5 work... I will let you know when it goes up.
