Overgaard Posted December 9, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does anybody have local knowledge of a good b&w film lab in Tokyo that can scan as well, preferable around Ginza? I have a participant on my seminar in January who will be shooting MP and need development/scanning overnight.

StS Posted December 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 12, 2010 Are you with someone, who speaks English and Japanese? There will be quality labs aplenty in Tokyo, however, it might be very helpful to address them over someone, who can translate. Otherwise, you might be politely turned down, simply to save everyone the embarrassment of not processing the order to your ideas. I doubt that a photo CD from a C41 film like BW400 or XP2 is, what you have in mind, I was successful with the 1hr lab in the Shinagawa train station on the ground floor of the atre shopping mall. Another point of entry might be, for example, Yodobashi Camera at Akihabara, who have a very large film department and English-speaking employees. If they can't process the film to your needs, they might be able to point you in the right direction: http://www.yodobashi-akiba.com/info/access.html The shop is located at the Akihabara (秋葉原) Station of the Yamanote-line, this is the green circle line. The closest station to Ginza is Yūrakuchō (有楽町). Hope this helps a bit Stefan
xxxceli Posted December 16, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 16, 2010 Hi, I usually go to National photo in Omotesando (same underground line as Ginza, roughly a 10mn ride). Site: NP-Web (in Japanese, sorry) Map: http://www.google.co.jp/maps/place?cid=10015709157831848074&q=%E3%83%8A%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A7%E3%83%8A%E3%83%AB%E3%80%80%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F%E3%80%80%E6%B8%8B%E8%B0%B7%E5%8C%BA&fb=1&gl=jp&hq=%E3%83%8A%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A7%E3%83%8A%E3%83%AB+%E5%86%99%E7%9C%9F&hnear=Shibuya,+Tokyo (wow, the "from the owner" photo is kind of misleading! Please look for the street view one instead;)) They process and print even black and white in 24h. I'm not too sure if it's the same for scanning though... Yodobashi, Bic camera and 55dpe shops can do 1 hour negative colour only. Takes ages for slides and b&w. I go there because I live close by, and that's pretty much the only one I can think of... They do a nice quality job though. I hope this helps, Kindest regards, Celia.
hiro Posted December 16, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 16, 2010 In addition to all labs mentioned already, I also recommend HCL, or Horiuchi Color Lab, near Roppongi across the street from Grand Hyatt in Roppongi Hills. They do all processing and are one of a few remaining film processing specialists in town. Just look for their yellow signs. Bic Camera in Yurakucho is also good though I have never tried a B&W film. They will forward all your films to lab specialists like HCL. You will need to have a translator accompanying you to most of these places with the exception of large retailers like Bic Camera and Yodobashi Camera who are popular among foreign visitors. xxxceli Posted December 17, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 17, 2010 Good one Hiro! I always forget HCL... I swung by National this morning to ask them if they could do film scanning in 24h, and they said it depends of the size of the file:confused: It is true, as Hiro said, that it would be preferable to have a translator if you need something particular. If not, you probably can get by just pointing at the examples displayed on the counters in most shops;)
hiro Posted December 17, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 17, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Have you tried Create, xxxceli? It's run by Fujifilm and has two shops in Tokyo, one in Ginza and another in Shinjuku. If you are Fujifilm user it's worth trying them because I heard that quite a few professionals relied on their excellent services. I guess the film maker had strict processing standards to control the outcome of images on their products in these labs. As you recommend, National Photo is a good place too. It's located on a narrow back street behind a big Audi showroom in Harajuku. May be a hard to find place for a first time visitor but they also cater for the professional photographers.
