john cleland Posted December 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all My M9 has developed a fault so is going on holiday to Germany for a couple of weeks. In the meantime I am considering sending my 35mm Summicron for 6Bit coding since the body is away and so I wont miss the lens. The big question is 'is it worth it'? I have too lenses, the 35mm Cron and a 21mm Elmarit which is 6Bit coded. So would you recommend sending the Cron to be coded now or am I throwing my money at something that is really unnecessary? Thanks John
Advertisement Posted December 8, 2010 Posted December 8, 2010 Hi john cleland, Take a look here M9 going for repair so considering sending lens for 6Bit coding. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ho_co Posted December 8, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 8, 2010 John, I gradually had all my lenses coded. The main thing you would gain is the lens ID in the EXIF data. In addition, the 35 will gain a bit in trade-in value. Technically, you'll probably gain nothing else. But since the idea occurred to you, I'd say go ahead. 250swb Posted December 8, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 8, 2010 Or do it yourself with a Dremel, even buying one saves you money over having Leica do it, and you can code any other lens afterwards. Steve
beoon Posted December 8, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 8, 2010 John, I recently sent two lenses back to Solms, one was a brand new 50mm Lux Asph for a very minor cosmetic repair under warranty and the other was a 90mm AA cron to get 6 bit coded. I had the same dilemma as yourself, but decided to get the 90 lens coded then all my lenses would be coded. I think the increase in resale value of the 90mm also makes it worthwhile and the glass on the 90 lens had a sparkling finish when it was returned. The coding cost 166 euros. tobey bilek Posted December 8, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2010 Just put an end mill in your drill press, then buy some paint and a brush. Or a Dremel tool and a stand. Of course there is German craftsmanship to consider. You will need to detirmine where to put the slots.
IkarusJohn Posted December 8, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 8, 2010 I often forget to turn my camera on when trying to take a photo, I also leave the lens cap on at times; I haven't tried to take a picture without a lens, but there is always a first, I guess. With all my lenses coded, but for the 75 Cron, there is no way I would remember to switch the lens recognition to manual; so my lens has gone to Solms. tdtaylor Posted December 9, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) If you are in the USA, send it to John Milich, who milled the slots professionally on 5 of my lenses for $35 each. I just had to add the white and black nail polish with a toothpick. Took about 10 days.
microview Posted December 9, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 9, 2010 Is that Mansfield Ohio or UK? If the latter, try Malcolm Taylor who charges c. £100 for 6bit coding but does a very neat job. It's not difficult to remember, though, if your M9 is set to manual lens recognition!

Hi Any chance you can give me the details of Malcolm Taylor, I asked Leica UK on Friday last week and was told £160.0 but would be dearer in January 11. I have 3 maybe 4 to convert( the 4th is if a code for a 135mm Apo-Telyt is issued) TomR:D
