janki Posted December 7, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 7, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Winter is now hard in many places in the Northern Hemisphere. Both birds and animals are struggling to find food. Each day, this kind lady is feeding the birds that live here by the pond in the middle of my hometown. The small fish gulls (Larus canus), which all too many people hate, get her help to live through the winter. Due to lack of food in the ocean, the numbers of fish gulls have unfortunately dropped dramatically to a critical point, in recent years. The picture is taken late on day with Kodak 400 ISO negative film and scanned in a Nikon 9000 CS. Even in the south of Norway where I live, it is at this time of year a very weak daylight. Weak light makes use of slow shutter speeds to a necessity. Steady hands are essential for success with photographing under such conditions. As an additional piece of information, I can tell that in northern Norway, they have now lost the daylight completely, and have "night" around the clock. janki Posted December 8, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted December 8, 2010 Stuart, turner, Paul, albert, Ernstblofeld, Tom and Herb,…… - many thanks to all of you for showing interest in my picture. Albert, it's interesting that you notice the wooden houses in the background. In the big world, Stavanger is a tiny little town. But we have a concentration of about 8000 old wooden houses in the middle of a vibrant downtown. This phenomenon gives the city a unique character. I'll see if I can look up some examples, and post under the topic of architecture during the next few days. Again, thanks to all of you!
