MPJMP Posted December 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) When I had my D-Lux 4 I carried it in the nice Leica leather pouch and used the included wrist strap. I sold that along with my D-Lux 4 shortly after I purchased the D-Lux 5. I have the new lether case on order, but in the meantime decide to simply use the neck strap that came with the camera. I'm actually finding I prefer the neck strap. The camera is that much faster to deploy without having to first take it out of a case. I took an unused screen protector for my iPhone 4 and cut it down to fit the D-Lux 5's 3" screen. I will probably cancel my leather case order and spring for one of the nice Giottos glass screen protectors. Anyone else using the neck strap with their D-Lux 5? Any other screen protectors I need to consider?
Advertisement Posted December 3, 2010 Posted December 3, 2010 Hi MPJMP, Take a look here D-LUX 5 neck strap, anyone?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MPJMP Posted December 6, 2010 Author Share #2 Posted December 6, 2010 Am I the only one using the strap? Hmmm. Maybe they could save a few bucks next time and just leave it out of the package? Before I place the B&H order, is there any screen protector other than the Giotto's that I should even consider?

Strap supplied is to short for the way I carry a camera with a strap. Makes the included strap useless to me and other straps are just to big. With a strap installed it make the camera bigger and not easily pocketable.
MPJMP Posted December 7, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted December 7, 2010 I found the camera slightly too big for a pocket and was carrying it in the leather case that was slung across my body. I figured that at that point I might as well just have the camera slung across the body and do away with the case. I'll admit, though, that compared to my MP with 50mm Summicron attached it feels pretty dinky.
girphoto Posted December 9, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2010 Am I the only one using the strap? Hmmm. Maybe they could save a few bucks next time and just leave it out of the package? Before I place the B&H order, is there any screen protector other than the Giotto's that I should even consider? Working in an everyday photojournalistic world, and using more than one camera, I find the neck strap fine. Use it all the time and it can stay out of my way when using my other cameras. For me the length is perfect, and when I need to pop it into my pocket, I just wind the strap around the camera and into my pocket or bag it goes. The D-Lux 5 is just another tool that I use and I find it easier to photograph some people with a smaller camera that sticking a larger camera in their face. leicanut2 Posted December 9, 2010 Share #6 Posted December 9, 2010 I use the neck strap. I keep it in a 0P/TECH case when not in use. Jan
JackTheRipper Posted December 10, 2010 Share #7 Posted December 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use the neck strap, it's fine... I wouldn't mind buying the leather case (which is in stock on Dale Photo I think)... Which Giottos glass screen will fix the d-lux 5?
kjohn Posted December 13, 2010 Share #8 Posted December 13, 2010 BTW, the leather case and neck strap aren't usable simultaneously. This poses a problem since Leica doesn't include any strap with the new leather case.
MPJMP Posted December 13, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted December 13, 2010 Perhaps one of those pretty leather half-cases is in the future for some of us? A neck strap with some of the advantages of the leather case. Are there any available yet for the D-LUX5?
Digitom Posted December 13, 2010 Share #10 Posted December 13, 2010 I also use the neck strap. I like this much more than the wrist strap. Because when I use the electronic viewfinder it may be lost when holding the cam only at the wrist strap. Also I like the camera hanging in front, switched on, so I can take quickly a shot. Is the same thing I do when I take my Digilux 2 with me. And anotehr advantage of neck strap: I have both hands free. Never have to lay down the camera anywhere, e.g. on a market or in a shop. I use a little hardcase bag from Cullman where I put the camera after shooting session together with mounted grip, the EVF has to be demounted then. Also the strap fits into that cullman case, is very handy to use that because it protects the camera perfectly, and in my opinion better then any half case could ever. When I have my camer in working position, the empty Cullman case fits into a backpack or I wear this small case diagonal over my shoulder, inside the little case from the EVF. Photos from the bag with cam is here (at posting #98): http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digitalforum/148692-unterschiede-d-lux-5-dmc-lx5-5.html
phillipgeorge Posted December 14, 2010 Share #11 Posted December 14, 2010 The D-Lux 5 will fit into the Leica D-Lux 4 leather case. The D-Lux 4 case is supplied with a detachable leather strap which can be easily attached directly to the eyelets of the D-Lux 5. The fit is a little tight through the D-Lux 5 eyelets, but a simple solution is to add very small rings to each eyelet. It's great to have the freedom of a strap attached directly to the D-Lux 5. You can then attach an Optical or LCD viewfinder and keep it hanging around your neck for quick shots. By the way, get the Voigtlander Optical viewfinder or the Panasonic LCD viewfinder as it is half the price of the Leica-branded viewfinder. How can you tell I love this camera! girphoto Posted December 14, 2010 Share #12 Posted December 14, 2010 Why a fitted Never Ready Case???? I guess those of us who use the camera daily and need the camera at the ready, usually have a back pack or shoulder bag cam just drop the camera into the bag. As a friend of mine once said " the camera is a tool not a jewel use it but don't abuse it" But i also respect those that use the camera on a part time or travel basis and want a nice soft leather case to carry it around in. Enjoy either way!

Before I place the B&H order, is there any screen protector other than the Giotto's that I should even consider? I use the Leica neck strap and find it ideal. It enables the camera to hang inside a jacket ready for instant use, yet concealed. I can also use it as a wrist strap by simply winding the surplus leather round my wrist. Very versatile! Enjoy either way! You are fully right. A camera must be used. But I also think it is useul to protect the cam when not needed. Withput anything in the backpack is a risk - best solution is maybe a photo backpack with "quick out" possibility. I like walking around with few bags and suitcases, so small camera is optimal thing and - for me - it is practical to have the hardcase for protect and then put the camera out of that bag for many hours on a trip and "wear" it with the neckstrap, and hanging the hardcase over my shoulder. Also the Hardcase I mentioned is very cheap - only 20 Euro. Practical solution, compared to the leather ready-case for about 160 Euro!
ottefrep Posted December 14, 2010 Share #15 Posted December 14, 2010 I use that very nice leather case when traveling. It gives great protection. However I always pack the neck strap that came with the camera, when I go out for the day. It makes the camera ready on a moments notice.

And since that is exactly the way I use my M rangefinders I find that I am now using the D-LUX 5 in a more "M-like" manner.
