I need an X-1 as a backup for my horrendously unreliable M9, which has gone down three times in 6 months. Would much prefer the black model, but the dealers are all completely vague about delivery dates. Does anyone have the black model -- I notice the Thumbs Up people had one. I gather they are starting distrubution firstr in Europe. Information, anyone ?

I think there are a few possible scenarios to consider:

1) Perhaps Leica has stepped up their QC and the grey X1 will no longer peel.

2) The black X1 might suffer from the same issue, but nobody knows this yet.

3) The grey X1 will continue to have peeling issues but the black one will not have peeling issues.

Out of the three scenarios, I think the third is the least likely. I think the second would be the most worrisome, especially if you're going to wait for the camera specifically to avoid the peeling issue.

Here's another idea to consider: since you're going to be rough on the camera, buy a used one. If there's going to be a peeling issue, it would have already surfaced, and any signs of wear will be supplemented quickly by the signs of wear that you inflict.

I don't want a used X1 -- one thing I want is lightroom 3, as my M9 came with Lightroom 2 0nly. This is simply a preference. All my cameras are black -- M4, Mamiya 6 and 7, Noblex, even my 8x10 Phillips. The grey looks a little finky to me. It will take the same pictures of course, and if I can't get a black one in a week or two I will reluctantly opt for the grey. What I don't get is why Leica was promising these for October, and now it looks like there won't be any this year. I still don't know if anyone out there has got one.

I wonder what happened, because they were supposed to be shipping before now according to the Photokina press release. It looks like they are going to miss the Christmas shopping season.

On the Leica website, a black X1 is shown in the new product section, but they still haven't updated the technical data sheet or brochure to include a black version.

Perhaps they're waiting for firmware 2.0....

There could be a production snafu that they caught at the last moment...

Maybe they're waiting for existing inventory levels of the grey X1 to go down...

There could be some sort of supply issues....

They might be trying to meet demand for other more profitable products...

They might be waiting until they reach critical mass in terms of completed units...

Maybe they just got their copies of Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3...
