petert531 Posted January 18, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 18, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Never the same light twice. I tried to bring some environment in this time as well. Coloured lights are a killer and blue the worst of all. Here it is. Not amazing but a first attempt that went not too badly Peter
Advertisement Posted January 18, 2007 Posted January 18, 2007 Hi petert531, Take a look here Danielle - lighting experiment . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
M'Ate Posted January 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 19, 2007 Peter, I like the lighting and the pose is good. The light switch and pipe are distracting to me Thought of cropping from below the elbows up and left of the switch. Does it work in B&W ? stuny Posted January 19, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 19, 2007 Peter - I think the duplex A/C box (I didn't realize you were in North America) fits well with the rest of the environment, giving it a seedy or institutional look offset by the fashion part of the shot. I think the only thing lacking in the ligting is the loss of shadow detail, confusing the slacks, coat and shadows, hiding the actual shape of the clothing and figure.. petert531 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 19, 2007 Thanks. I am in Toronto, Canada, where Winter finally arrived this week. I agree that the black dress just loses it's detail altogether in this, it was one my dissappointments along with the inablity to get a certain look from the model....the tension present in her mouth is due to a slight overbite. Coloured lights are so so tricky...which is why I was playing with them. Learn when the pressure isn't on, so when it is you have the experiece to pull it off! Key to success in any craft. stuny Posted January 19, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2007 Of course, if you were a bit out of town, say in Scarberia, you might have seen a bit more of winter, or has it been mild there, too?
petert531 Posted January 19, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted January 19, 2007 Wow, you know your way around! In fact I work just on the border of Scarberia, but live in Mississauga-fun commute to say the least AND my studio is in Downtown Toronto. We love driving here. I am adding some new pix here from the same session. One is similar to the original, chosen by Makeup artist and had the mids boosted. The other is a beauty shot with totally different lighting. I tend to underexpose with digi and correct later. No correction for blown highlights...shooting slide for years with various Leicas (R4, M6, R8) taught me that. On the beauty side, I just couldn't get rid of the tension in her lips/jaw. This is the pick of the litter that way. Peter

fotoshock_com Posted January 19, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 19, 2007 Excellent experiment... the blue is very modern! I love these pictures!
stuny Posted January 19, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 19, 2007 Peter - I like the lighting, framing, colors and very slightly dreamy, soft feeling to the beauty shot, and it does show Danielle to great advantage -- She looks beautiful here, and the over-bite caused tension is very subtle. In the last image, bringing up the midtones helps greatly with defimnition in the dress (which I though in the first was slacks and long, light coat.) petert531 Posted January 20, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted January 20, 2007 Thanks. Last night I was insane and did 4 totally different lighting setups in a 4 hour shoot. I will post those soon after I get a chance to level etc. There is some new lighting styles I tried, but I did do a different coloured gel as well...ruby red...Let's see what you think of them. What is frustrating for me is the 'agenices' here in Toronto like boring work. Creative work is frowned upon. What fashion photog is interested in shooting catalogue looking pix. No model or makeup artist is either. Only the agencies that want to pimp out the models for catalogue work are interested. YOu can't shoot editorial unless it IS editorial. Wow. My mentor told me this over the last year and I can hear him laughing in my head! It's not like I am being paid for this, I shoot for free as I have said, just for the love of it. Guest flatfour Posted January 20, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 20, 2007 Peter - These are excellent and particularly the head and shoulders. I can see what you mean by the tension in the lips. However I have yet to see a good photo of someone smiling so you are on the right track. She's a great model.
