johndorr Posted December 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted December 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I bought the D Lux 5 several months ago and just downloaded LR3. I have never used a complex editing program like this and wondered how to start learning how to use it. Can anyone recommend a good book or video on how to master this softwear? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks. John
Advertisement Posted December 1, 2010 Posted December 1, 2010 Hi johndorr, Take a look here LightRoom 3. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
dcoombs Posted December 1, 2010 Share #2 Posted December 1, 2010 Before you invest in any guidebooks (of which there are several good ones) I suggest you go to Adobe's website and look at the online tutorials they have for LR3. There are many, and they are very good. Likewise, on the website there is a forum which gives good feedback on questions people have. Good luck! microview Posted December 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 1, 2010 Yes, play around before you spend on books. With LR3 you cannot ruin a DNG since, however many changes you effect in Develop, you can simply revert to the unedited version, or backtrack step by step. If you have a card reader open on your PC and open LR3, a subsidiary window will open asking if you wish to import all pics on the card (ticked boxes). If yes, the LR3 will save the images in a dated folder. You can delete this folder if unwanted with the minus key. The simplest thing in Develop is to correct for exposure if too dark, then click on the little boxes over the image in the RH Histogram panel; these will show (blue) areas too dark, (red) overexposed. Then try the sliders 'Fill Light' and 'Recovery' to correct these. Lower down you can tweak sharpening (default is OK) and individual colours, eg if you think the results are too pink, say. The temperature control is obvious as is tint. You will see the word 'custom' appear when you make changes but you can click on the arrows to the side of that word and revert to 'as shot' or try any other light conditions appropriate. In the LH column you will see History which shows step by step what you have done after 'Import". You can click back to any stage and move forwards from that. If you go the RH panel and click on Reset it takes you back to image as imported, eg if you had activated the rectangle icon under the histogram to crop your picture or (by clicking bottom right under the framed image) had rotated it. In short, simply experiment and you'll soon get the hang of it. Good luck!
spylaw4 Posted December 1, 2010 Share #5 Posted December 1, 2010 Even though there are now many more facilites available in LR, it still IMO remains largely an intuitive programme to use. There are many tutorial videos out there on the web - and the Adobe site is the better place to start.
