snooper Posted November 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted November 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everybody. I'm not posting a lot but I read you almost religiously every day, as there is a lot to learn from your posts. I've done a quick search on the threads, and I could not find the answer, but maybe I did not search at the right place. The question is simple : you have a Mac laptop (I have a macbook pro) and an external monitor. How do you organize your video settings? Is your external a replica of your "main" screen? Or do you use the large monitor as a second full screen for more desktop space? How do you use Aperture or LR3 with your external monitor ? Thanks ! Nicoleica Posted November 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 30, 2010 Hi. I share my second monitor (An iiyama ProLite E2472HD) between my 13" MacBook and my 24" iMac. For both, I use the second monitor as an extra screen. This enables me to keep my workspace less cluttered than if I tried to fit everything onto one screen, especially with the MacBook. Overgaard Posted December 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted December 3, 2010 I have a 30" Apple with a 15" MacBook Pro sitting next to it on an aluminium holder that has the look of the Apple screen: http://paulgrunt.com/2009/07/31/mstand-macbook-pro-stand/ So both screens are upright and you can adjust the hight of the laptop screen, and at which side it is of the big screen, so that the screens seem like one big screen and the mouse simply continues to the next screen (like if you were pointing at the screen and moving your finger to the next). I usually have e-mail, chats, etc on the laptop screen, and then use the 30" for photoshop, lightroom in full view (some times with additional "second screen" window open on the 15" next to it). I use external wireless keyboard and mouse for this setup, and when I unplug the big screen, everything is moved automatically to the laptop which I then use without any external keyboard or external mouse. lanetomlane Posted December 6, 2010 Share #4 Posted December 6, 2010 I use my monitor for full screen editing of the image and keep the "tools" from Photoshop, or Lightroom on my laptop screen. _______________________________ Regards, Tom Photography by Tom Lane
carlosecpf Posted January 19, 2011 Share #5 Posted January 19, 2011 I use a 27" inch iMac i7 with 16GB of ram running Aperture 3, Nik's Collection Plugins and Photoshop elements. When I need a 2nd small monitor for chat, email etc while editing I connect my iPad via AirDisplay.

Nicoleica Posted January 21, 2011 Share #8 Posted January 21, 2011 Hi. UPDATE I've recently upgraded my 24" iMac to a 27" iMac with 8GB. (Thank you Apple!) The 24" screen now looks tiny when sitting alongside its big brother. pinetar Posted January 28, 2011 Share #9 Posted January 28, 2011 Hexacore 3.3ghz Mac pro refurb. Added 2-8 gig ram sticks today from owc. May add a Seri Tek 2port ext. 6 gig sata card at a later date for raid o. G5 4 port card is obsolete. Good for 20 drives. I expect to have 2 dvi monitors and VGA. I found a cheap dual link adapter for a 2nd dvi on amazon.

d2mini Posted March 7, 2011 Share #11 Posted March 7, 2011 Cool! How's the color and tone accuracy of the Wacom? It's just OK. It's more contrasty/harsh than a proper monitor, kind of like a laptop screen, so the new NEC is what I use for critical color adjustments. I couldn't use it as my only monitor, but it just can't be beat for heavy photoshop use.
gjames9142 Posted March 7, 2011 Share #12 Posted March 7, 2011 Rather than starting a new thread, can anyone tell me what is the optimum drive for a macpro? I have a fairly new 8 gig Imac, but want a travelling platform, and will get an 8 gig macpro, but don't really know how big the solid state drive should be. 126 or more. It can get expensive. elbonedeedo Posted March 10, 2011 Share #14 Posted March 10, 2011 15" MacBook Pro, 8GB RAM, anti glare screen. Adobe LR3, Aperture 3.3, PS5. I like it. I've also got a 27" iMac in my office upstairs, but admittedly do most of my editing/developing RAW on my MacBook Pro.
