OSX 10.5.8: I want to extract photo files in "Find" and save them on a new hard drive

I have a 24" i-Mac and I have accumulated many digital photo files, especially with my Leica M8. Frequently, I go to file, and then go to Find and type in "Tiff" to see all of my important edited photos in one shot. What I would like to do is create a hard drive totally dedicated to just these files by using the "Find" command and then "Select All" and drag everything into the new hard drive. For some reason, OSX 10.5.8 will not let me do this, unless I am doing something wrong. So how do I solve the problem?

I'm guessing all your tiff files are nit in one single directory? I would think that it's easy to use Automator to do this.

PM me if you need assistance doing this.

Automator is entirely unnecessary.

Search, then click 'Show All' in the results. You might have to refine the search by specifying the button (top right) to search Names rather than contents. Also be sure your search is not including the receiving external drive.

Now, while still in the 'Show All' window, select/all and drag them over. It works for me.

If it still does not work, then try Select/all and then Control-Click. A pop-up menu will appear. Look towards the lower part and take 'Copy ... Items'. Then go to the external drive, Control-click in it and take the pop-up menu item 'Paste Items'.

If that does not work, then please tell us what the error message is, if any.

(I can also send you a one-line command to paste into Terminal that will do the job all-at-once. There is another command for Terminal to synchronize all or selected files between disks. Terminal rules.)

Show all ? Where is that ?

mmmmm, I suppose 10.5.8 is different to 10.6.5 (which I'm using) because this is on the top left for me.

Proceed with caution! If you search – and your files may be ".tif" rather than ".tiff" – and use the squares icon rather than the list [see screen shot], the action of dragging these out, eg on to the desktop, will take them off the HD wherever stored. I'd take them individually across to a desktop folder and then drag that to your external drive. Incidentally, the slider allows you to enlarge the images. (Please excuse my perhaps teaching my grandmother to suck eggs!)

Maybe use the Mac Time Machine to save everything before you begin shifting data.

As I see it, once you have dragged items from the "find" panel you might wish to put them back into their original folders but won't be able to. As I say, use Time Machine backup first and you can then copy over folders which have been modified.
