Advertisement Posted November 24, 2010 Posted November 24, 2010 Hi kennedda, Take a look here D-Lux 5 External Electronic ViewFinder Choices?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Shootist Posted November 24, 2010 Share #2 Posted November 24, 2010 Haven't used it on the GF1, as I don't own one of those, but I do use it on the LX5, which is the same camera as the DL5 so it will work on the DL5.
Walt Calahan Posted November 24, 2010 Share #3 Posted November 24, 2010 I use one on my LX5. Very handy, but the image in the viewfinder is a little course. I've heard that Panasonic is working on a replacement, but there is no release date.

I've heard that Panasonic is working on a replacement, but there is no release date. Interesting thing to hear about the replacement, but sure that price will be higher. I think if one needs the EVF (like me ) one should buy the Panasonic viewfinder, you can find it on the web for about 150 Euro already (new!). I do not mind about the low resolution, if I need to take discret photos during an event or so it is better to look through that tiny thing then having all surrounded people have a look onto the bright display... girphoto Posted November 25, 2010 Share #5 Posted November 25, 2010 Has anyone tried the Panasonic DMW-LVF1 on a D-Lux 5? This is the same one as used on the Panasonic GF-1. Yes, I use it everyday on my D-Lux 5. Works great! Purchased a LN one from KEH for a fraction of what the Leica one was.
kennedda Posted November 26, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted November 26, 2010 I am really pleased the Panasonic electronic viewfinder works for the D-Lux 5. According to a couple of recent reviews of the LX-5, the rear LCD can be difficult to see under some circumstances and an external viewfinder (even an imperfect one) would be a great tool to check your composition. Exact! That is the point! A viewfinder helps to find the composition and that is in fact the only thing to use a viewfinder - unfortunately these viewfinders are gone mostly - but now they come back (godheavens!) I think noone can seriously say in times of digital computing and cheap storage space that it is useful to check sharpness or even colors on a little display, to save storage on an SD card while, after checking the pictures, erasing the bad ones! Always I got the feeling a pic is unsharp, it is unsharp in 90% of the cases. So I check at home. For me, a camera display is really useless for that. For me, it is only the display for the menu and some information (like histogram). BUt an EVF can give me that information very easy, also the resolution is not high. jcrutcher Posted November 30, 2010 Share #8 Posted November 30, 2010 Are the Leica Evp and the Panasonic viewfinder the same other than badging? I'm about ready to buy the Leica version but would buy the Panasonic if the work the same. Thanks! Jim

Thanks!Jim Even though I own the Leica branded EVF I seriously doubt that there is any internal difference between the Leica version and the Panasonic version. At best, I feel that my Leica version would be worth a little more at resale.
AlanG Posted November 30, 2010 Share #10 Posted November 30, 2010 This camera with the EVF is very tempting to me as a small travel camera. But I have to say that the Panasonic/Leica EVF is inferior to the one for the Olympus M4/3 cameras. That is the main thing keeping me from buying it. Although the current one is probably "adequate," it seems to me that Panasonic really needs to make a better viewfinder to use on this camera and the GF series. And of course the Sony NEX also needs one. I bet all this will shake out in the next year or so.

Panasonic makes both of them and places the Leica name on the outside. you can use the Leica on a LX or GF series cameras and the other way around
tacomadm18 Posted December 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted December 3, 2010 So the panasonic evf1 is $132.00 on B&H and leicas evf1 is $385.00,,,,, SAME UNIT Just like the cameras the EVF from Panasonic is exactly the same as the one from Leica. Anyway yes they are the same except for the name on it. And does the Leica version have a Red Dot or just the name? Those Red Dots are expensive. Ecaton Posted December 3, 2010 Share #14 Posted December 3, 2010 The viewfinders are different, as are the cameras;). That is why the Leica VF alone costs as much as a new pana camera:eek:.
jjonsalt Posted December 4, 2010 Share #15 Posted December 4, 2010 I have a question, perhaps someone with an EVF could answer. I applied a Giotto screen protector to my D-Lux 5 with the hot shoe cap in place. I would like to know if the drop on the backside is the same for both the cap and the EVF. Not sure whether that was a statement or a question. Anyway yes they are the same except for the name on it. And does the Leica version have a Red Dot or just the name? Those Red Dots are expensive. I understand the differences and similarities between the D-Lux 5 and the LX 5. However I thought the EVFs were in all ways other thaan name the same. I'm surprised. Just what are the differences? Thanks

And these differences are? The reason I ask is because if there is something different other than the name I might would consider the Leica brand. I would like to get an EVF if I could get someone to answer my previous question, i.e., "I applied a Giotto screen protector to my D-Lux 5 with the hot shoe cap in place. I would like to know if the drop (length) on the backside is the same for both the cap and the EVF".

Holding both the cover and the EVF in my hand, lining up where they fits in the hotshoe the EVF drops lower then the cover.
chuckw Posted December 4, 2010 Share #19 Posted December 4, 2010 I would say that the EVF drops about 3mm lower than the hot shoe cover. If you look at the image on the rear screen the EVF goes down to the very top of the of the image.

Tried to pull those guys legs who seriously believe the D-Lux5 and LX5 are different cameras. They aren't and neither are the EVFs. Name and prices are hugely different, obviously. I find it quite remarkable that Leica can charge a price for an EVF which exceeds the price for a new LX5.
