I am thinking about buying one but don't want to if is only that. I have a Leica CL would the X-1 be similar? Richard
Advertisement Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Hi scooterboy, Take a look here X-1 P&S?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Dan States Posted November 23, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted November 23, 2010 More like an advanced compact. It is like the cl in that it is a junior Leica that can produce top quality results. In handling it is nothing like a cl at all. Â If you are looking for a tool for fast paced low light shooting id stick with the cl. Otherwise the x1 is the best choice on the market for compact size and top quality images. Â Best wishes Dan
BonneyD Posted November 23, 2010 Share #3 Â Posted November 23, 2010 I am also thinking about getting X1 mainly for street photography, tired of carrying around 7D plus lens, have read good and bad reviews. I would appreciate any feedback. Â Thanks
h00ligan Posted November 23, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted November 23, 2010 X1 @ f5.6 and six feet is really hard to beat for a zone shooter. Top results. Â Look up my posts here, I'm no apologist..but if you want classic street shooting, it's a nice machine.
NZDavid Posted November 23, 2010 Share #5 Â Posted November 23, 2010 What is wrong with P&S? Being able to simply P&S is great, especially for travel and street shooting. The X1's slow AF does restrict it somewhat, but image quality is excellent, and IMO the X1 has the simplest manual controls of any digital camera today. ezc203 Posted November 23, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted November 23, 2010 If firmware 2.0 is as effective as described in previews, I think the X1 will become an even more powerful camera. Â To answer the OP's question, why don't you snoop around the X1 forum, its strengths and weaknesses have been debated to the hell and back. Many many many threads praising and bashing the camera. Although in my personal experience, the praises come from people who know and use the camera, while the bashing comes from disillusioned buyers that assumed a $2000 Leica camera was going to do everything their heart desired. Â Personally, I am a BIG FAN of the Leica X1. It has done everything I expected it to do and more. But then again, I was familiar and accepting of its weaknesses before I bought it. Â These are the reasons why I bought the camera: SHALLOW depth of field Color Great ISO1600 Â This is just the opinion of a 21 year-old, not to be taken seriously. scooterboy Posted November 23, 2010 Author Share #8 Â Posted November 23, 2010 Thank you for your responses. The images you displayed demonstrates the performance of this camara. However how is the LCD display using the camera outdoors? It has been my observation that some LCD displays are useless outside in bright sunlight. Â Thanks Richard

h00ligan Posted November 23, 2010 Share #10 Â Posted November 23, 2010 I haven't been in a position in the desert here in which the screen was useless, unless wearing polarized sunglasses and changing to portrait.
gar1013 Posted November 23, 2010 Share #11 Â Posted November 23, 2010 I haven't been in a position in the desert here in which the screen was useless, unless wearing polarized sunglasses and changing to portrait. Â When I was test driving the camera out at Redondo beach, bright sunlight with mixed clouds and lots of glare, I had lots of problem with the LCD. Â I wouldn't use useless as a way to describe it, but I jumped at the chance to borrow a viewfinder.
h00ligan Posted November 23, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted November 23, 2010 I can see that. If my x1 gets repaired and i'm happy with it, i'll probably end up getting my wallet out for the actual leica vf.. Â i think, as you said, the overcast or bright but cloudy is more of an issue than direct sun.

NZDavid Posted November 24, 2010 Share #14  Posted November 24, 2010 Good question, all LCDs are hard to see in bright light, especially with sunglasses. Which restricts the choice in compact cameras to those with accessory shoes allowing you to mount a separate viewfinder -- which is very bright and clear and really helps with composition. The Voigtländer 35mm is more economical that the Leica finder but still excellent quality.
h00ligan Posted November 24, 2010 Share #15 Â Posted November 24, 2010 Thx for the info David. The only reason i'd get the leica is I wear glasses and it seems to protrude more from the back and offers a rubber cup.
NZDavid Posted November 24, 2010 Share #16 Â Posted November 24, 2010 I wear glasses, too, they have a few scratches now, but they were from before!
h00ligan Posted November 24, 2010 Share #17 Â Posted November 24, 2010 BTW, to answer the op, something I remembered. Â At the m9 academy event the leica tech rep said (regarding the x1) - 'what point and shoot were you using before this one?'.. so leica considers it a point and shoot apparently
Ecaton Posted November 24, 2010 Share #18 Â Posted November 24, 2010 P&S are versatile, jack of all trades and master of none. The X1 is quite the opposite. It does a few things very well, but is the wrong tool for many others. If I was in the market for a digital CL successor, I'd have a look at the Ricoh GXR with the 28 and 50mm equiv. modules. After the second FW upgrade (launched after the X1, but already 2 good FW upgrades, bravo Ricoh) the GXR's AF speed is much much faster than the X1's. I'd wait with a X1 purchase until FW 2.0 is available. I hope Leica delivers on this one. AF speed benchmark will be the Ricoh, which has the same sensor.
