Can't use UV filter with lens hood on 35mm Summilux ASPH v.2

Hello all, I'm having an issue with a B+W UV filter that I recently purchased. This is the one I bought:

B+W 46mm UV Haze 010 F-Pro Filter 66030559 B&H Photo Video

But when I mount the filter on the lens, the lens hood doesn't fit anymore. The filter appears to be too 'fat' to allow the lens hood to slide down far enough to screw on. It gets stuck on the matte gray material that's inside the lens hood. I was wondering if the lens hood was purposely designed this way, or if I just need to get a 'skinnier' filter.

Hi Ranma,

this problem has been extensively discussed on a number of threads including this one:

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/customer-forum/150967-new-35mm-summilux-question.html.

Only Leica and some Panasonic filters fit under the hood. Other options include machining down your filter of choice (which has been done successfully), or putting the glass you want into a Leica filter frame (?). I'm still waiting for my Panasonic ND filter to arrive for my 35 Lux.

Good luck

Mark

Ran,

I would recommend buying the Leica UV filter which of course fits but is much more expensive. If you bought the B&W filter from the same store as the lens they should take it back as they should have known it did not fit. Exactly the same thing happened to me.

Mark

Thanks MarkP, I bought the filter from B&H. Of course I can return it, but they don't have the Leica UV in stock.

I'm thinking about just not using a UV filter. I didn't use one on any of my other cameras, so it's not like I absolutely have to use one.

The hood is robust and protects the front lens well, together with the hood cap when the lens is in storage. So I did chose not to use any filter. Especially as I often use that lens under difficult lighting, and this way I have two air-glass surfaces less to cause reflections from light sources.

The scene below was lit by five candles, period. Lens wide open. With a filter, the risk of multiple reflections would have been great -- that sort of thing happened regularly with my v.1 lens.

Hi Lars,

great low-light image.

However, here was a deliberate decision not to use the filter in a specific (and controlled) situation. This is different to being out and about with it slung over the shoulder, and used in varying conditions out-of-doors.

Mark

I go more with Lars on this one. Nothing wrong with having a filter to protect the lens, but I prefer to keep it in the gadget bag and just pull it out when I need it--sea spray, dusty winds and the like.

Of course, that's easy to do with a small front element such as the 35/2 has, but becomes harder emotionally the bigger the exposed glass! :)

Edit--

Come to think of it, the choice not to use the filter may be part of the Secret Leica Knowledge. ;)

I once heard it expressed as, "An extra piece of glass between you and the image can only degrade it."

Hi Ran ,

I do not want to be treated as a "flap joy" , but it seems that Ran has no luck with his 35mm ....

However, I have a question to ask :

why not buy an original Leica filter to put on a Leica lens ?

Personally, I put only Leica filters coming from my Leica dealer and he has always filters available.

All my filters are original and protect the front lens of all my 7 SLR lens (on SL,R4S and R8) and all my 5 M lens (on M7,M8,M9)

In case it does not have filter , he places an order for me and i wait (1-2 weeks),as did Mark :)

I wish you good luck and good photos for the rest

Best regards

Henry

I was without the E46 Leica filter for my 35 Lux for 2 weeks, and very anxious using such an expensive lens without 'prophylaxis':D

Regards,

Mark

Since I have an M8.2 as well as an M9, and do not want to take filters on and off, I use a 46 mm UV/IR on the new 35 lux. It does not seem to cause any cyan corner problems but perhaps I am not as discriminating as others.

Depending on the shop, one may find it easier to get a UV/IR 46 mm Leica filter than a plain Leica UV filter because some shops have many UV/IR filters left over from "the M8 days."

Because UV/IR filters may be "leftovers," some shops may be willing to sell them off for cheap.

Also, I am finding the FLE 35 lux ASPH to be a really great lens and may end up using it more than any other.

"why not buy an original Leica filter to put on a Leica lens ?"

Because B+W MRC filters are said to have better coating & flare less. But this may be an urban legend.

I too had the annoying experience of ordering a B+W 46mm for 35 Lux FLE. But after reading the thread, I think I'll just send it back & get by without one. I have some cheaper lenses for wet/sandy/windy conditions.

I had the same problem with my Summitar, and it's proprietary front thread. I bought a Summitar B&W UV because the Leitz Summitar UV is scarce and pricey. The barn door hood fits over the B&W UV, but will not clip on. I went back to using the Leitz, and now the B&W just sits.
