Where does everyone order prints from?

I'm a bit frustrated. I want to order 8x12 prints in accordance with the X1's 2:3 ratio, but am running into problems:

1) Many places only allow you to do 8x10 prints, and the 2:3 prints are limited to 4x6 and 20x30. 8x10 would have to be a cropped x1 image I don't want.

2) Many places are über expensive

3) The few places I can find resonanly priced and with 8x12 only print JPG, and don't print from RAW. Colors are definitely muted in X1 JPG compared to the RAW.

Where does everyone else get their 8x12 RAW prints from? Thanks

I get mine from Costco (jpgs). Not sure what you mean by "Colors are definitely muted in X1 JPG compared to the RAW." If you export RAW to jpg after PP from LR, the colors are fine. If you are concerned about the (theoretical) loss in quality when exporting RAW to jpg, you can use TIFF format.

I've seen jpg and raw comparisons that have noticeably better colors in the raw (Leicas site has good ones). I noticed slightly muted color exporting from Aperture too. I will try TIFF thanks

Plus Costco has a color profile you can download. I think if one isn't printing for fine art, it's a pretty good solution from what I've seen (price vs result), especiallywhen color matching.

Photobox will allow you to print a wide shot on paper, with a white top and bottom.

If you use a camera that doesn't conform to standard paper sizes this is going to be inevitable.

I thought about a printer- which do you have? And is it just a money pit filled with ink & paper?

I use an HP B8850. I like it and yes the inks are expensive... but they last a decent amount of prints and I doubt it's any more expensive than paying someone else. The main thing is that you have control over your images.

I print with an A3 HP B9180 with LR3. This gives me total control of the picture. I can chose the type of paper, size of print, colour. The end results (in my mind) are worth the expense. Mind you the cost of printer ink, if petrol cost the same as printer ink, it would cost you thousands to fill your car......
