SF 20 with the X1

Will the SF-20 flash TTL on the X1. I am guessing not based on how mine behaved when mounted on my camera. The best performance I was able to coax out of it was in M mode, same as my M8. The manual states that the SF-24 will TTL on the X1.

Any tips or thoughts welcome.

David, I rarely use flash with Leica cameras. However I have explored use of my SF20 with the X1 with promising results. However, you must work manually which many professionals recommend.

Meter ambient light, then shoot with flash having set the desired aperture. Adjust the output of the flash until its impact is not strongly evident, but is doing its job. It is a fascinating challenge. Once mastered, the technique can be very useful in some situations. There is no need to use TTL or buy a gun purely for that purpose.

I also bought a generic Nikon flash extension lead and that makes the outfit even more versatile at low cost using the flash off-camera. Search the forum for threads which discuss the generic flash connectors.

Hi David,

Thanks for the response. I also rarely shoot Ms with flash and have gotten nice results in M mode using the same approach you detailed.....I was just curious. I went back and read the manual on the plane -I am traveling with camera but left my flash home :) I seem to recall there was something in the menu for flash to try that might enable the SF20 to TTL.

That said M mode will suffice as you have obviously found.

Best,

David

  • 5 months later...

I have been searching on google for an answer to this issue but couldn't find anything.

Does anybody know whether the SF 20 flash can work TTL on the Leica X1?

Thanks,

Simon
