f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #165 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) The two focusing units from my two 280mm lenses. V2 on left, and V3 on the right side. V3 is much bigger in size in terms of lens barrel's diameter and length. This explains V2 has minimum focusing distance of 5.5M vs V3's 3.5M. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #166 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) Here are 280 lens heads. V2 on left, and V3 on the right side. Note that V2 uses the 46mmx0.75 thread to connect to its focusing unit but V3 uses its 63mmx0.75 thread instead. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #167 Posted May 27, 2015 Advertisement (gone after registration) Now I remove the collar which is used to cover up the bigger male 63mmx0.75 thread of the V2 lens. Also I remove the 46mmx0.75 female 7.5mm sleeve from my V3 lens head. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #168 Posted May 27, 2015 Now I screw in the 14138 to my V2 lens head after its protective collar unscrewed/removed. The removed protective collar from my V2 lens is now screwed onto my V3 lens's bigger thread which is used to connect its focusing unit. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #169 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) Now I turn the lens heads facing up to show you they were screwed in securely. Also I swapped 14138 and the protective collar from V2 and V3 lenses. Note that the 14138 is now screwed onto my V3 Lens head. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #172 Posted May 27, 2015 Also I tried to screw a 16598 onto my 14138 but failed. The thread on 16598 is lightly bigger. Is is enough to say there is another version of 14138? May be when 280 V3 was last modified to connect directly to Bellow II and also with an updated 14138 for its Televit use. luigi bertolotti Posted May 27, 2015 Share #173 Posted May 27, 2015 First of all, f35p, thanks for your complete setof pictures : looking at them and making the same combinations on my 280V2 (1.900.221) and 280V3 lenshead (3.059.688) I can draw some definitive conclusion... and a final question mark - Your lenses are exactly as mine in terms of threads, collar, sleeve (only, my V3 has the "new" f stops ring - fine-knurled, but this doesn't regard these arguments) - The collar of the 280V2 and my 14138 are completely interchangable between my two lenses, like in yours : no doubt, thread is long and all goes smooth. - My 14138 was surely part of the V3 lenshead from the origin : it was sold as a 11904 lenshead only (apart the fact that I bought it like this, it is confirmed also by the detail specified in our Wiki section : last batch 3059601 to 3059800 is stated as a batch of 11904s) - SO... there aren't two verions of the 14138, and the large male thread of V2 and V3 has always been the same (my V2 is even a bit older than yours... my 14138 ,I repeat, fits perfectly on it) - Finally, I made your last trial, which never did before... 16598 on 14138 : DOES NOT FIT... though, is a matter of fractions of millimeters... indeed in some positions seems that there is a slight engagement, along 15-20° of rotation... but is CLEAR that the two threads are not made to match each other Which brings to the final question mark : why hell my V3 lenshead DOES fit directly the bellows II ? And my 16598 TOO ? I have made repeated tests : - the 280V3 lenshead engages into the bellows' front female thread (with A BIT of play), makes TWO complete rotations (720° and something more) then is blocked and stays well firm (as I said in another post, is a setup of scarce practical usability, anyway) - the 16598 engages into the bellows front female thread (perfectly, not a bit of play) , makes THREE complete rotations (1080° and something more) then stays firm AND in contact with the bellows front (the V3 lenshead does not, as you can see in a previous picture from me, there is a small gap) The only conclusion I can draw is that the 280V3 lenshead fits directly on bellows II "by chance/by tolerancing" : it was not MADE to do this ;16598 WAS made for this, as clearly declared in Leitz literature/listings (so as the 16596for BM lenses on bellows... tonight I took out also it.. it engages identically to 16598.. they are clearly machined exactly the same way) I said "by tolerancing"... but it could be also "by conicity"... I mean, if the thread of the bellows was machined (and designed ?) with a slight conicity (isn't rare that threads are machined this way, as any good engineer must know) this can explain the decent coupling of the 280V3 lenshead
luigi bertolotti Posted May 27, 2015 Share #174 Posted May 27, 2015 ... and, f3p5, just a side question : where have you found your 14138 ? Seemed (at the times of the start of this thread) that it was not so easy to find (I even evaluated how to have it reproduced by some lab...)
f3p5 Posted May 27, 2015 Share #175 Posted May 27, 2015 (edited) ... and, f3p5, just a side question : where have you found your 14138 ? Seemed (at the times of the start of this thread) that it was not so easy to find (I even evaluated how to have it reproduced by some lab...) I got it from ebay auction for 280 V2 with 3-claw 14138 adapter. Also, as you know, if any 280 (V2 or V3) kit with Televit on sale, it must use a 14138 to connect. Right? Although you don't see any 14138 externally. So I end up with 280 V2 but I really want was only the 14138. Also, I learned from thread, 280 V2 or V3 can be screwed directly onto a Focorapid without using the 14112, then the protective collar from the 280 V2 can be screwed onto V3 lens head to cover up the ugly and exposed 63mmx0.75 male thread. So, there is no total lost of my 280 V2 but actually I also really like the pictures taken from my 280 V2. Edited May 27, 2015 by f3p5
k-hawinkler Posted May 27, 2015 Share #176 Posted May 27, 2015 Hi Luigi, this old thread surely brings back memories. BTW, in 2011 and 2012 I bought an 14138 adapter, one from a dealer in Holland and one from ebay. So, I have two now! I need to find the time to more carefully read the recent additions of this thread. Amazing stuff. But first an image I shot with the 280/4.8 v3, I believe, on D800E. Welcome, dear visitor! f3p5 Posted May 28, 2015 Share #178 Posted May 28, 2015 (edited) I also screwed my 280 V2 and V3 lens heads with 16598 on Bellow II for comparison. They are looking very nice but nothing will look better than a directly connected lens head. The 280 V2 lens head is 6mm (102mm vs 96mm, the lens head section exposed before the 16598) longer than that of 280 V3 lens head. The 280 V3 lens head looks better with the V2's protection collar screwed on but there is a small gap between the 16598 and the V2's protection collar. The 280 V2 lens head with 16598 and Bellow II looks more pretty (more seamless connection) than that from the 280 V3 combination. f3p5 Posted May 28, 2015 Share #179 Posted May 28, 2015 As for 280 V2, V3 and Televit connection, V2 is about 6mm shorter, 67mm vs 73mm for lens head section in front of the 14138, than that from the V3 setup.
