New 35mm Summilux Question

Mark yes that is so, with the qualifying comment that only the Leica E46 UV or UV/IR fits inside the hood. Other brands do not. This has been discussed in other threads.

So people that want to use other filters need to remove the hood and then use the internal filter thread for filters and/or third party hoods if wanted.

and Rich,

we have discussed this elsewhere. The 3rd party filters (incl B+W, Hoya, and a number of other brands) have an external diameter wider than the lens barrel by a fraction of a millimeter. The hood will NOT fit over these filters and the filter can then be very difficult to remove!

For me this is especially a problem as I want an ND filter for my 35 Lux to take advantage of reduced DOF.

We had concluded recently in another thread that options included Panasonic ND filters (I have one on order) which apparently DO fit , trying to put ND glass into a Leica filter frame (waiting to hear from from another forum member to see whether this worked), or using a lathe to cut down the outer diameter of a 3rd party filter (already successfully done by forum member).

Personally, I otherwise really like the Leica screw down hood system. (Younger man from the filter age!)

Regards,

Mark

Thanks, everyone. I'm going to contact Schneider Optics, which makes B+W filters, to see if they are aware of the issue and are planning on making filters that will fit inside the new 35mm Summilux's lens hood.

Rich,

They don't, and probably won't, make such a specialised filter for a hand-full of lenses. However, if this is not the case please keep us informed.

Again, the easiest option would be the panasonic 46mm filters if you want anything other than a leica UV (I should add that the Panasonic 46mm PL filter obviously doesn't fit).

Mark

The screw-in/screw-up system looks great. It does not work great. And I care more for the working than for the looking.

The older man

I fully understand, but as I rarely change filters when out and about it suits me fine...personal preference again.

Mark

The younger man

To "visualize" what Lars said - the colorized orange areas in the image below are two interchangeable parts that screw onto an EXTERNAL thread around the front of the lens. Having no effect on the internal threading for filters.

Leica introduced the screw-on shade of this type with the 16-18-21 TriElmar in 2006, and has also used it for the 18/24 Elmars, 21/24 Summiluxes, and the Summarit lenses.

Cosina/Voigtlander pioneered the technique (among recent Leica-mount lenses) with their 50 Nokton and 75 Heliar around 2001. Except that - to keep Lars happy ;) - they did not include a protective ring. One HAD to use the hood or leave the threads exposed.

It can cause confusion. I "saved a sale" for a local store after the saleman and customer had spent 20 minutes trying to fit a hood onto a 75 Summarit, not realizing they had to take off the protective ring. They'd given up, and the customer was going out the door, when I twigged to what they were talking about and showed how the ring came off. Customer left (again) having bought the shade.

I'm surprised no one has asked for an orange á la carte M9 to go with Andy's lens...:D

Thanks, Mark. Does anyone know whether Panasonic filters other than the 46mm ND fit inside the new 35mm Summilux lens hood?

Their DMW-LMC46 (link below) appears to be a clear protective filter.

I contacted Schneider Optics / B+W FIlters. Kevin Cruse of their U.S. office was most helpful. He received and forwarded the following response from HQ in Germany:

the mentioned lens is a very special design from Leica and B+W doesn't plane at this time to manufacture filters fitting this lens.

As a result, I ordered Leica's E46 UV filter. Would prefer a clear protective filter a la B+W's MRC 007, but such is life. Question - will I notice any difference in IQ / transmission with the UV filter vs none or a with a B+W 007?

You won't notice any difference. Generally, the only time a quality clear or UV filter effects lens performance is with true telephoto lenses at wide apertures. The filter is much closer to the nodal point. Exceptions for very short lenses are when shooting at physically small apertures. I'm sure we have all seen raindrop images from the later situation.

Back to the fitting problem - A machinist can knock off a fraction of a millimeter. Competent machinists won't harm the filter mount or glass. No worries.

Thanks, Pico. I am now looking for a competent machinist in CT, USA to do the job.

You might know of Grimes' right next door in Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Steve Grimes died several years ago, but the place is run by those he mentored. They do good work, and it is all strictly custom camera work.

For the rest - you might be interested in some of their work. Maybe Leica CM and Minilux lens hood.

(I once lived in Wethersfield, CT and am from Warwick, RI)
