Hello all,

I thought I'd introduce myself on this section of the great L.Camera forum.

After a looong decision process (thread still running in the M9 section), I bought a near mint condition M8.2 yesterday! I could make a good deal with my dealer to trade in my X1 for this s/h body together with a brand new Elmarit-M 28 f/2.8 ASPH lens + Leica IR filter.

The Nokia(!) flash pic is not that good but the camera looks almost brand new. I'm very happy with it and I can't wait to go out and shoot!

I'm looking forward to learn from the 'M8 gang' here and maybe share a thing or two!

Richard.

Congratulations, Richard.

As i am about to make the same decision (X1 to M8) i am curious to hear what your experiences are. Especially shooting and handling and IQ compared to the X1. Do you take your new M8 as much around as you have your X1? Size and IQ is something i love with my X1. On the other hand the possibility to use different glass and shoot faster tempts me. Would be nice to hear some fresh thoughts.

Regards.

Mike

Hi Richard!

First of all, congrats on the new camera and also welcome to the "section".

Having had my M8 for about a year, I'm quite confident you'll enjoy yours. I also have the same elmarit as you have and until recently had two other lenses as well. At the moment I have the elmarit and 75 slux, with 50 slux pre-asph coming soon'ish.

Have to say I really haven't got the grips with the elmarit yet. Using an rf has turned me into more of a "normal shooter" when it comes to lens choice. I just sold my 40mm nokton to fund the 50 slux.. but the 40 nokton was by far my most used lens.

That is not to say the elmarit won't be good for you! It's a nice small lens with great quality.. just for some reason hasn't really grown on me yet.

Anyway, hope the M8.2 and the new lens will bring you loads of joy and great photos! I'm sure the many gurus in this section will gladly help you if you run into any kind of trouble with your kit. And hopefully you'll share some of your photos and thoughts here as well.

Hi Mike, if you're in the same boat as I was you might find this thread in the M9 section of interest: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/144390-should-i-take-m9-jump.html

I think it covers your questions at length... :)

:) If you are going to start collecting lenses and accessories, you would probably enjoy the Fotografica fair at Houten next sunday. It's always a good place to rummage for interesting and obscure items. :)

Greetings Richard from another Richard,

I must say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading the thread you linked to, it was a wonderful expression of the decision process you went through as well as the not always 'helpful' input we receive from friends and from forum members. Please note the 'M8 Photography' link at the top of our little patch of this Leica Forum and share some images from your 'new' M8. The images you shared in your 'decision' thread were pretty nice and I think would be a welcome addition to the collection of M8 Imagery there.

I've been grappling with the M8/M9 choice as well, but have been blessed (& cursed) with a very long lead time before my financial situation allows me to implement the choices I make. The M8.2/8u/8 options win out for me because, well, they're cheaper than the M9 route and will allow me to get more photographic goodies! (*My 'financials' will resolve with a very large lump sum). I also like to experiment with Infrared Imagemaking so that doubles down on the appeal of the M8 family because I can skip buying/modifying a dSLR for IR shooting.

Anyway, Welcome to this patch of the Forum

Richard in Michigan

A month ago I changed my M7 with sumicrons 35 and 90 for a "as good as new" chrome M8.2

My Noctilux (1.0) and a 17 mm Tokina (both used by me for a few years) with Novoflex LEM/NIK for the Tokina are just my dream.

Don't need "cornerfix" or 6bit codes.

So I feel happy with your choise: you will be pleased by your results

John

Richard, welcome aboard. A very fine kit. Will look for your images in the Photo section. You have found a treasure trove of informative Leica owners on which you can depend to offer mostly disparate opinions and lots of experience with the M8, M lenses and all the little things that make using this instrument a pleasure. Enjoy!

Hi all,

I've have found something that's a little weird with my 8.2. The imposed images (is that the right description?) in the focus patch of the finder don't align perfectly with each other when focused.

The difference is very small but it's there and the image in the focus patch never gets 100% sharp. Just off by a whiff. My dealer had a look at it too and saw the same thing, also with a different lens.

As far as I can see it doesn't affect the pictures. They're tack sharp. My dealer said he wouldn't do anything about it unless it really annoys me or if I really want to.

What do you think?

Richard.

Hi Richard,

Are the two patches mis-aligned vertically? (One patch slightly above or below the other.) If so, then this is a common ailment, and can be caused by any number of things, from a knock to vibration. It's also not unknown for cameras to be slightly out of alignment when delivered. (My M8 had to have this adjusted when new.)

As you have noticed this, it probably will start to annoy you, and so I would suggest that you would wish to get this fixed sooner rather than later. It's a simple adjustment, but if the camera is under guarantee, it is best done by Leica.

Thank you Nicole,

The patches are a very tiny bit off horizontally and vertically. Hmm... I don't like the idea to send it off to Leica for a few weeks. :(

I take it this is not something you can do yourself or by some specialist who can do it 'on the spot' ?...

Richard.

It is normally a quick adjustment (For the vertical alignment anyway.) that an authorised repair agent should be able to do in a few minutes. There are also several threads in this forum about doing it yourself. If you have any kind of guarantee though, I'd leave it to an expert if I were you. Perhaps your dealer can arrange for a local repair agent to make this adjustment for you? (Without knowing how your dealer would prefer to address this, I'm loathe to suggest any specific repair agent, but there are local options.)
