gyoung Posted January 17, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 17, 2007 You should be able to get it cleaned/repaired, Malcolm Taylor in England can do such work, he had my III for overhaul, the 5cm Elmar needed attention and he exchanged the rear cemented pair of elements for another from his stock, but the curvature of the elements and the actual focal length of the lens need to be taken into account. Exchanging lens elements is not for the amateur really! Gerry Young
fuchs Posted January 17, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 17, 2007 Hi Chia, I have heard only good stories about John Van Stelton in the USA (http://www.focalpointlens.com/fp_intro.html) repairing and even completely overhauling lenses. Also Leica service in Solms might be of help if they still have the elements in stock. A friend of mine just had his 50/2DR serviced by them at Solms and it came back perfect with both new front and rear elements. Not cheap, but perfect. Anyway, if the lens elements are OK (no scratches, no damage to the coatings, no etching by fungi), I am pretty confident that almost any skilled Leica repairman can clean inner fog. Sadly, there's no way to tell if the internal coatings are damaged or not from the outside and before attempting to clean them. As a side note, the manufacturing factory tolerances in Leica lenses are so tight that they rarely need realignment, collimation or re-centering at the reassembly stage (not an invitation to try this at home, though). best, Ed
Philippe D. Posted January 20, 2007 Share #4 Posted January 20, 2007 Hi, I would like to know is there anyway to get Leica M 90mm f4 Collapsible Lens Elements in the market? Not only the elements but complete lens are quite often offered for about 200-250 US$ in some times very nice condition, and that's much less than what a repair will cost you.
