I waited several months for mine but it was well worth the wait.

ditto! i ended up getting one from popflash. great lens, one that led me to sell my cron 50. the lux is worth the wait.

note: i did not pay an advance. that's just not my style. i'd prefer to keep my money in hand and wait for a lens to surface.

I was lucky enough to snap a used 50mm asph summilux and have a couple of questions for people whp actually own it.

1.) The focus ring is a lot stiffer than my 35mm asph. It takes quite a bit of push to move it, is this normal? Do you have any tips on how to focus?

2.) I haven't tested this thoroughly because i only shot a couple of pics with it so far but some of my pics seem to have a very slight front focus shift. I've heard about lenses back focusing on the M9 but never front focusing. Any one heard of front focusing? To tell you the truth, Im 90% sure that it is user error because I've never shot at 1.4/f before and the dof is not forgiving at 1.5cm deep. However, one's imagination/worries always runs wild...

Im itching for tomorrow's day light to hit the street and test it properly! Very exciting :-)

I have not used the 35mm--but I can tell you that the focus ring on my Lux 50mm is smooth. I have found this lens just as easy to focus as my previous 50--a cron, the most recent version. Furthermore, I have not detected any signs of back or front focusing.

:-/ Sorry for late reply, forgot to give an update for this.

Anyway... I've been using the lens for 10 days now, it took a bit of getting used to but it's an awesome lens.

On how stiff the focusing ring is: Still heavy but very smooth. In fact, I now prefer the heavier feeling of the 50mm than the lighter feeling of the 35mm cron.

On front/back focusing: I didn't get a chance to check this in detail (Down to the millimeter) but to be honest, I won't. I didn't have any problems with it, with any picture, so what I thought was a problem was me being stupid.

Sharpness is stellar at f/1.4. A highly recommended lens.

I have had an order in for this lens in chrome with Meister Camera in Berlin for a couple of weeks, and no news. I will wait for this lens as it will compliment what I have (I have an M9 with Crons 75 (black) & 35 (chrome)), and it seems it's worth waiting for.

Does anyone have any information about delivery times?

Cheers

John

Hi John,

received mine last week from Meister Camera Berlin. Waited about 5-6 weeks. Two weeks ago I received another confirmation that Leica had no delivery dates. Suddenly it appeared on the doorstep!

Well worth waiting for.

Mark

Yes, do not go for those up marked lenses.

You could always get in line at a second reseller besides Meister, sometimes the smaller ones don´t even have a queue and still they get a lens occasionally. No need to put money down. All resellers now that the lens will sell within minutes if you regret your order.

Excellent point. I just used the Leica website and contacted about 10 dealers in smaller cities in the U.S. Success. A new 50 lux will arrive in 2 days. A 40-minute search beats waiting many months.

...then vote with your feet. Demand your money back and take your business elsewhere.

I really don't understand the point of paying in advance and letting the dealer have the benefit of your money for weeks and months at a time instead of doing a little shopping around yourself. If you outsource the process in this way then don't complain when it doesn't work in the timescale you expect.

Regards,

Bill

Unfortunately this is the reason that dealers request a deposit - to show your commitment - because too often in the past buyers have joined waiting lists at multiple dealers, which creates a false demand. With x people on their waiting list each dealer will order x lenses but when they arrive it turns out that the dealers are stuck with lenses because the buyers will buy the lens from one dealer and cancel their order at the others.

Pete.

I kind of disagree with you here. These days it is kind of different with how it used to be, at least when it comes to certain specific Leica lenses.

Any dealer with some kind of knowledge of the market today knows that the 35 and 50 lux lenses are very easy to sell. And it is a fact that they are on backorder.

For dealers to even get lenses they have to place orders with Leica even before they know they have a customer for it. And those who don´t are stuck with being last on the list.

And because of those cunning dealers we sometimes hear a rare story of somebody walking in to a small shop somewhere out in the middle of nowhere and finding a 50 lux on the shelf.

It os solely up to the dealer to charge in advance, but they know they do not have to.

My advice above was to call up other wendors and see if there is one lying unsold, and as Leicapassion found out in 40 minutes instead of two months, there was. Lucky him. :D

Let me add to this.

Here in NZ, there is only one authorised Leica distributor and just a handful of authorised retailers. I've had a 50mm Black Summilux on order since April 2010, and I'm still waiting.

It's no fault of my local dealer (they regularly go in to bat for me), but it sure raises a serious question about the procurement relationship of the NZ distributor with Leica. When the NZ distributor seems totally unable to secure even one black 50mm Lux in a 10 month span, something odd is going on. And unfortunately, as unfair as it may be, it finally reflects poorly on Leica.

I agree. My disappointment is not with Rahn but with the availability of the lens or the lack of it.

I ordered an ordinary black one in the US; took just over nine months to get.

Go take pictures; the new lens will be there when it comes. ;)

It's on the way; there are hundreds if not thousands of others also waiting, and some of them are ahead of you in line.

It's simply the way Leica's production works; their lenses cannot be mass-produced.

BTW--it's worth waiting for! :)

When I inquired about the Summilux-M 50 ASPH about half a year ago at one of the Dutch dealers they informed me that they had 200 (!) on order and no less than 400 orders for the 50/0.95 Noctilux. They seemed to be very pleased with Leica trade but warned that I was in for a wait. Meanwhile I have got a Summilux-M 50 ASPH (chrome) from Amsterdam but it was a bit too stiff in focussing so I have sent it in to Solms for further tweaking by dr. Leica. (Together with my M8 with a shutter fault/driver motor error, shutter as such is still fine).

I am very happy with how Leica are dealing with this, and wait for the camera & lens to be returned.

Waited about four months with Robert White, paid in advance. Worth the wait. Now the new 35 lux- 5 months and counting, appears to not be close to the horizon....

That's very poor indeed - there's really no justification to take all your money and then sit with it in their account.

I paid to take advantage of the exchange rate. I bought at the low point of the Pound, and saved about $1k. By the time it arrived, the Pound had gone back up. Worth a 5 month wait.

If this were not the situation, I absolutely agree with you. Should have the 35lux in the next few weeks, same situation with the Euro, but saved even more on this one.

At the rate our debt is going in the US, I'm guessing the situation will be reversed in a year or two.
