A while ago I found a Leica M4 Black Paint in very nice exterior condition save a few marks, and I sent it to Leica to have a cost estimate for a technical check up. It seems they found a few things to do - amounting to about 800 Euros.

That is a lot of money to spend - does anyone know how much a very nice M4 Black Paint is worth?

Depending on the condition $2000-5000

800 Euros seems very high for an overhaul. What are they fixing?

Service at Leica can be a lot more expensive than using an independent technician like DAG, Golden Touch or Kindermann. http://www.lhsa.org/repair.html

There's also http://www.angelfire.com/biz/Leica/ in England.

800 EUR sounds a lot AND it is. But the M4 black paint is a valuable and very special camera - you should be happy to have one.

In case LEICA works on it you are most probably safe for another 10 yrs. or more with your camera. Same with the other repairstations as well of course.

That´s 80 EUR per year, not too much actually in case you can afford it ... And: Arendal ./. Oregon seems to be a far longer distance than Arendal ./. Solms.

LEICA needs some EURs now.

The equivalent of 800 Euro was about what I paid for a total health check and renovation of a 1983 jubilee M4-P in Solms a couple of years ago. This included a cleaning of the finder and new shutter curtains, but no exterior work. The back flap looked like the very devil, but I got a new one for abt. 150 Euros. Expensive, but what will you pay for having the love of your life rejuvenated?
