Too all that helped the older geezer and wife (who now has her own new camera___mine !)

They are closed today, But tomorrow I'll order a 2nd one. Pete, your right they that rule

does taketh when they please_____In the Bible I think ? Along with the jaw bone & ass !

Must say for a p & s it is a very nice camera. That being said with the Halloween coming up we went to a graveyard__ I have been going to different ones for decades __loads of history there and the manner in which those that are gone. They are so different in other countries and states also as I sure most of you know. Found some faded ones dating to 1790's.

In B & W of course. We found one in a Christian area with strong Christian symbols ___

then with an Angel on top ___on the side almost hidden from view__was the Star of David

with an inscription we could not read. More history, just love it !

Many thanks to all here for your suggestions and help __otherwise she would not have had

a good time. I used the older model __M9. P & S does have it's advantages NOT having to change out lens.

Sorry for rambling __end of boring lecture, "class dismissed !" lol

Shootist. Quoting you,

Note that the camera is dead when you get it new. After inserting a charged battery the camera will charge it internal battery which will cause the removable battery to drain more quickly for the first few days. And it is said that Li-ion batteries gain charge as you use them, recharge them.

This morning after shooting yesterday and this morning battery going down fast. I phoned my contact at B&H he said "NO INTERNAL BATTERY !" And has no clue why it is draining so fast. No new batteries as yet. And yet is has been fully charged now 6 times.

Waiting on battery to fully charge before going shooting again.

Yes, ordered another D-LUX 5 for my wife___no she got mine___ordered a new one for myself.

Keep you posted, thank you for you for your comments.

david,

With due respect, there must be a battery on the motherboard otherwise your D-Lux 5 wouldn't be able to remember your settings when you pull the battery out to charge it.

Pete,

I could not agree with you more_____I don't know what "retains the memory" it in____but I will find out.

Phoned B&H again____spoke with female __she said same thing "no internal battery"

At thought__solid state ? Stored in the chips ?

I do not understand____but by nature I do not let things go away.___and when I find out

I will post for all to read, unless some genius beats me to it. OK?

As of an hour ago____battery still draining far too fast. B&H does NOT HAVE THE EXTRA BATTERIES ! ??? I usually buy al least 4 extra. But no place to buy as of today.

David,

I picked up a spare D-Lux 5 battery from Ivor at Red Dot Cameras last Friday and I know he ships internationally so you might like to try Ivor. Or David Farkas at Dale Photo & Digital in Florida may be able to help you.

If your battery is running down faster than it should then it's very likely to be caused by one of two things:

a) the battery can't hold charge and needs to be replaced or B) the charger is faulty and is not able to supply enough current to fully charge the battery. Without a second battery you can't really prove it either way, but one thing that might help is to leave the battery on charge for a full 24 hours in case it's just charging slowly (the internal resistance of some batteries can be higher than normal and the charger will take longer to charge them).

It may not be the problem but it sounds like it's worth a shot while you wait for your spare to arrive.:o

There simply has to be a internal battery of some type. Otherwise the clock would stop running as soon as you took the removable battery out.

I will bet on this. One way to find out is take the removable battery out for 3 days and see if the clock still has close to the right time. If it does then it is being powered by something.

Where's Mark Norton when you need him (to dissect the camera).

Pete, Shootist,

Ok__ I thank you so very much for your help, suggestions, and other contacts !!

hahah__went out today to shoot again____sunny weather--fresh air_____good food__

Came home ____just woke from nap____and read your messages

Will phone BOTH tomorrow. I wake early so they better be up and have supplies.

This is the craziest thing I have seen with Leica. I did some research on Li_Ion batteries.

PLUS: Pete we were discussing "saving data"____I have two voice recorders___they go for many hours(about 450 hours) But the batteries will not last __so I must replace batteries (AA) quite often__and when the batteries are dead the memory STAYS ! It does not erase the very long recordings !! It is of course "solid state". Saving to the chips. I only thought of this after posting last time. Methinks the memory is stored in those chips. We need a BSEE to answer this question__or a 9 year old who knows what most older people do not know. Right ?

In the morning I shall phone both companies you mentioned and leave the bloody battery plugged in all night.

I'll keep everybody posted on this__hmm annoying little problem.

Pete, 0310 hours

After a good night's sleep___woke up Dale's in Florida -_ordered 3 DL 5 batteries.

NO grips. But days ago found west coast company shipping grips today and ordered one.

onehttp://www.popflash.com/accessories/leica-d-lux-5

Still charging the DL5 battery. Hope it is not a bad one nor charger. Met a woman from Japan yesterday carrying a Canon of course. She admired my Leica____I had taken a small piece of black tape over that small plate on bottom, "made in Japan". Flashed her the camera and said "GERMAN made !" She bowed ! Few limited words in Japanese and she bowed again.

The early bird catches little sleep. Adieu !

David,

There is another, more comprehensive DL-5 manual on the CD that came with the camera. Page 26, under "Changing the Clock Battery" refers to the internal "clock battery" which allows the clock to run for approximately 3 months without a maiin battery in the camera. The clock battery is recharged when the main battery is installed. It usually takes 3 to 5 charge / discharge cycles of a Li-ion battery to acheive full capacity. If you don't acheive full capacity after 5 charge / discharge cycles then there is a problem with the battery / charger.

Best regards,

John

John,

I just read what you mentioned. That does answer the question after all. I have read the PDF

but missed that. As for the main battery, after 5 full charges it is doing fine. I did buy extras

as most of us do, but was worried about sending in the charger to B&H for exchange.

Thank you for locating this. Now we know what most young kids probably would know off hand. Thank you your research !

Pete,

I must agree___but they are nice guys at B&H.

Are you having as much fun with your's as Moi' ? It is a tiny camera___difficult to get use to the smaller size but I have been getting some nice shots with it. I have, well some other Leica's. Including last years M9 __this is my first p & s by Leica and been thinking it over, when we take out the larger models like the M9 we must take the extra lens, batteries, memory cards, etc. For me, the DL-5 is really "growing" on me. The quality of the pictures and the lack of all the other items we must carry. I never have been a `pro' __I know that and never will be, no talent ! But I do enjoy shooting so many different subjects __this little DL-5 might just take the place for me for the future.I have the grip and made my own lens string__Boy Scout long ago. (besides $35.00 for a silly black string ?) In one pocket 2 extra batteries, a 8GB card in camera and ready for a day of shooting. I usually shoot in RAW, but even the .JPG's are looking great to my eyes. It is not the camera for all, but I ordered another for my wife. It was that or go without dinner___lol

Thank you again for your discovery. We would have gone to our graves never knowing how it saved the bloody memory. And Yes, after those first few charges the batteries are holding their charges very well.

Take care and enjoy the day___evening for you now,

David

  • 2 months later...

At another post here they mentioned the book:

Photographer's Guide to the Leica D-Lux 5 by Alexander S. White

Got mine off Amazon and it is a very readable book explaining every nuance/feature of the D-Lux 5 along with many pictures to show you how settings affect a picture and the Index is quite complete.
