SD card for M8

I believe that you can use any available SD or SDHC card. However, once you go over 8GB, your counter is going to read 999 for a very long time. :) Plus, very high capacity cards mean that you can loose a lot more data in one go should it fail. :(

Yes. SD or SDHC, but not SDXC.

That means biggest card is 32GB, according to the SD 2.0 standard.

Since you asked about the largest card usable, it's possible for a card manufacturer to work around this maximum by not adhering to the standard.

I don't know of any manufacturer doing this and don't see a need for it with M8 or M9, but the fact that 32GB is the largest size for which SDHC is defined doesn't mean a larger card couldn't be produced.

Nicole's answer adds practicality to the equation: If you lose a card, or if one goes south on you, how much data would you be prepared to lose? In his article "Frugality and the art of looking" (http://www.imx.nl/photo/page152/page152.html), Erwin Puts states his choice:

... I use the very old 512Mb cards in my M8 (this allows me to take about 50 pictures) or 1Gb cards in my M9. It is a pleasant surprise to note how this self imposed frugality concentrates the mind....

I have got into the habit of using 2 Gb cards for exactly the same reason - lose one card and you have lost only 186-ish pictures, not the 1100 that you have taken over the week's holiday. On holiday, I find that one card of 2Gb is sufficient so a new card for each day is an easy system to follow. Even then, I like to backup to a netbook if I can.

Some cards can be a bit slow to write and if I hit "play" too soon, the camera gets a bit twitchy. But just slow down, I tell myself, and don't worry too much!
