D-Lux 5 Setting distance setting

Sorry, I don't have a D-Lux 5 or an LX5, but on the D-Lux 4, one of the choices on page 5(!) of the [sETUP] menu is labeled m/ft.

It's right after the "TV aspect" setting, on the next to last page of the [sETUP] menu.

It took several weeks for me to get everything set the way I wanted it with the D-Lux 4, and to understand what would be activated when.

I hope the D-Lux 4 offers some guidance to the D-Lux 5. :(

Good luck. :)

I remember seeing it, I set it to feet (I think), but now I can't find it.

I'm on LX5 but they are the same camera.

Looking through the manual I still don't see it. Could be in the initial setup when the camera asks you to set the clock.

Looking at the EXIF in Bridge I have the option to show subject distance checked but nothing turns up in that field. Unchecking the option to hide unused fields places the subject distance field in the displayed EXIF in Bridge but there is no entry. So the camera doesn't care about FT/M.

Ah I just turned on my other P&S camera, A Canon S90, and that does have a distance units.

That is where I remember seeing it. The LX/DL 5 does not have this.

I take it you've searched all the [sETUP] options. Should be there, but I can't find it in the LX5 manual either. :(

If no one comes to your aid, why not just give Leica a call? And when you get the answer, post it here! :)

As I posted above it doesn't exist in the LX5 or the DL5. Not only does it not exist in the menu options, any of them, the camera does not record the distance the lens focuses at, feet or meters.

I guess Panasonic doesn't consider the distance important so they left it out.

Ed, thanks for the response. You say you think you saw it and set it but can't find it now. Okay, that's good...

But when you choose manual focus, does the LCD show distance in meters or feet?

As you know, you can make that setting on the D-Lux 4.

As I understand it, the question isn't about the EXIF (where distance doesn't appear with the D-Lux 4 either), but about the manual focus settings.

I can't believe they left it out. Maybe we Imperial System users aren't as important as we think!

But I guess if they think you'll use the MF Assist function, they may think none of the numbers are important. Maybe they're into the Zen of Focus Setting. :(

vi--

Check the other 'set-once' items in the [setup] menu--time, language, date setting format, etc. I doubt seriously that they've left it out.

But who knows? Sounds like a lousy messup that I'm sure they can correct in firmware, but it's a dumb mistake.

Yes if I go to Manual focus it displays it in feet. But as I stated in my previous post the camera I remember seeing the setting for feet or meters was on the Canon S90 I have.

If no one can find the option on the camera to set this or any reference to it in the manual then it is not included. Could be a bug in the V1 firmware. I guess the only way to tell is let the camera sit for days/weeks with the main battery out until the internal battery runs down and see what you get when you turn it on for the first time.

People that have the DL5 here in the states and over there should check what they get when going to manual focus. If any display it in meters then somewhere on the camera there is a record of it but as far as I see no way to change it from what it is set to at the present.

As the LX5 doesn’t appear to optionally display imperial units either, I guess the chances for the D-Lux 5 regaining this feature by way of a firmware update are slim.

So: Ed's LX5 reads in feet and Pete's D-Lux 5 reads in meters.

That must mean: Either

a) there's an in-camera choice (which no one can find); or

B) there are different versions of the camera.

Anyone got an idea how the three versions of the D-Lux 5 differ? (from "Technische Daten" download)

Why doesn't someone with a D-Lux 5 contact Leica with the question "How do I switch between meters and feet?"

And why doesn't someone with an LX5 contact Panasonic with the question "How do I switch between meters and feet?"

Speaking only for my experiences in the US, I've found both companies' customer service to be excellent in responding to specific questions.

  • 2 weeks later...

I contacted Leica Technical in the US about switching the D-Lux 5 between feet and meters, and today received this response:

"The measure of distance can not be changed from meters to feet."

So the different version of this camera, in both the LX and DL versions, are set at the factory for the areas/regions they are going to. USA = Feet EU = Meters and never shall the twain meet. Have no idea what the DL TK version is set to.

Ahem...

There are those of us in the EU who still work in feet, rather than metres. I have tried to estimate distance in meters (the Ferranti scale...) but gave up when I realised that my subject was thirteen gas, one electricity and half a water meter away....

What are we supposed to do? At the moment I'm sticking with my 4...

Regards,

Bill

I guess you ask the guy beside you with the LX5 how far it is?

I can't imagine Panasonic would be so dumb as to sell the metric version in England and environs.

(Ed's US version of the LX5 is in feet; maybe someone from the Olde Country could tell us whether the LX5 there is in meters or feet?)
