bill Posted October 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So, my new Sonnar is splendid, except for one small detail. There is a "pinch" type snapcap, with the "pinch points" inboard, that can be removed with the lens hood on. Unfortunately, Zeiss, in their infinite wisdom, equipped the pinch points with grooves that run vertically instead of horizontally. As a result, you spend more time picking the damn thing up off the ground having plinged it across the floor than actually shooting. I want to find a snapcap of a similar design but not so stupid. Any suggestions? So far I have tried Speed Graphic and eBay, but as yet no luck. Regards, Bill

stuny Posted October 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 22, 2010 Bill - Hopefully you'll find a pinch design with horizontal grooves. The snap caps with edge buttons are rather good at making escapes, not unlike your Zeiss.
bill Posted October 22, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted October 22, 2010 Stuart, that is exactly what I am after - there isn't room for edge-buttons with the hood in place. Regards, Bill
tobey bilek Posted October 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2010 My Nikon caps have a smooth surface where I pinch. As a result I can not get the caps out or I lose them. My solution was a bit of Gaffer tape over the pinch point. Have not lost one again and being vertical surface. it is not seen either. Calumet sells gaffer tape, very dark grey. And gaffer tape does not fall off either. Self adhesive sandpaper would also work. Or use some other tape. Or rough up the surface with 80 grit paper. bill Posted October 22, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted October 22, 2010 Yeh, the tape idea is where I'm going, I fear... I've just got off the phone to Robert White; they fully recognise the problem, but have no alternatives to offer. Regards, Bill
colorflow Posted October 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 22, 2010 I have followed a way to remove/put-on Zeiss inboard lens caps that works >90% of the time. (I still drop them occasionally). When removing, point the lens down then pinch and let the cap drop into my hand. When putting on, point the lens up let one side of the pinch catch the lens (or filter) rim then pinch the other side. Letting gravity help seems to work for me most of the time.
