johndorr Posted October 19, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 19, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I recieved my D Lux 5 yesterday and found out that the instruction manual is on a CD in twenty five or so languages. The US version is some 220 pages long. I called Leica today and they said they do not plan on publishing a hard copy of the manual. I said the CD version is cumbersome and not portable. For the price of that camera, a manual should be included. Great camera and it fits (snuggly) in the D Lux 4 leather case. John Orr

andybarton Posted October 19, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 19, 2010 Are you wanting to carry round a manual that is 220 pages long and weighs more than your camera?
pop Posted October 19, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 19, 2010 I, too, seem to belong to that shrinking group of people who (a) read the manuals for their products and ( hate reading them on the screen, not to speak of the notes and stickies which tend to ruin the display. If you can't be bothered to print the manual, why don't you bring the CD to a copy shop?
wda Posted October 19, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 19, 2010 I share your frustration because I often return to my paper manuals for a refresher on features. When stuck with a user-unfriendly CD, I start by printing the index then, with a short-cut keystroke I can whiz to the needed page. It doesn't help when travelling, but once you have mastered the critical controls, you don't need it on a daily basis.
Walt Calahan Posted October 19, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 19, 2010 Why not take the CD to a printshop, and have them make a one-off copy for you to lug around? My Panasonic LX5 came with a short printed manual, as well as the CD long version. I copied the PDF manual from the CD to my laptop. Still haven't figured out a bunch of stuff they've crammed into the firmware. Once I set a camera to RAW format, I usually turn the rest of the stuff off. JackTheRipper Posted October 19, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 19, 2010 I too like having manuals. Great bathroom reading material ;-)... or for road trips lol
ceflynn Posted October 20, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Supplied paper manuals must fit the suitably small box for the camera. Printed pdfs can be made to fit a standard paper size. You may find that some formerly inscrutable icons used in the interface have some basis in reality when seen at a larger size with better resolution. JackTheRipper Posted October 20, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 20, 2010 I just received my D-lux 5 in the mail and it definitely has a paper instruction manual... yours did not come with one?

I don't think that you have yet checked out the size difference between the printed manual and the one on the CD. There is a huge size difference, with the one on the CD containing vastly more information. The CD manual, for example, explains in detail each and every possible menu setting - very helpful in setting up the camera to do exactly what you want.
