carlprad Posted October 10, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 10, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) If I send my Leica M8 to Leica NJ for a much deserved servicing: Cleaning, Lubrication and Adjustment, what exactly do they do? What is included in the CLA? Also, I noticed that the shutter on my M8 has become a little louder over time. Is a shutter adjustment included in the normal service? Finally, what have all of you paid, on average, for your routine servicing? Thanks
Advertisement Posted October 10, 2010 Posted October 10, 2010 Hi carlprad, Take a look here What's In a Leica NJ CLA?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
ramosa Posted October 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 11, 2010 and--pardon an add-on question--about how long does it seem to take?
ho_co Posted October 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted October 12, 2010 Since no one is jumping in to answer, maybe the best bet is to call Leica in New Jersey and ask them what's included, how long it takes, and maybe a price range as well.
wstotler Posted October 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted October 12, 2010 Thanks. Add me to the list of people who would like to know gory details about the CLA and also RF adjustment, down to fine details. Not just, "Well, Will, they clean, lubricate, and adjust." Really, *what* do they clean (details), what do they lubricate (details), what and how do they perform adjustments (details). Complete with some "whys." As geeky as much of the forum is, I'm surprised I have not seen a detailed description of the CLA or RF adjustment process anywhere here, in print, or on the Web for the M8s/M9s. Is the full CLA/RF Adjustment information intentionally embargoed? I think most of us would take one look at the process and say: "Leave it to Leica." I'm making the presumption here that the CLA process (on the mechanical side) is not beyond the scope of dedicated hobbyist DIY, but that there are nuances and skill that a person who does it every day can bring to the work--that's the value add. Thanks! Will EDIT: I sent an inquiry to service in Solms about this. More, if and when I get it.
ho_co Posted October 13, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 13, 2010 My understanding is that a camera is evaluated when it goes in: What needs to be done to it? If that's the case, there's no way they can quote in advance what they're going to do to your camera, and how much it will cost. That may be less applicable to more modular, largely machine-built cameras like the Panasonic siblings. So if you're in Europe, talk to Solms. If you're in North America, talk to Allendale. Anyway, keep us posted, and let us know what you hear!
zombii Posted October 13, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 13, 2010 I sent mine in about three weeks ago for a vertical line problem. After about a week and a half, I got the estimate which was mapping out the problem pixels and what pretty much sounded like a CLA. Time estimate was 3 - 5 weeks and $475. Wasn't surprised about the time. From my experience with them on an R lens, I'll be lucky to get it back in 5 weeks. I wasn't happy about the price estimate. It better be pretty much perfect. This was one of the early S/N bodies too. They couldn't even tell me if the sensor had been replaced previously when it got the upgraded shutter and framelines. ho_co Posted October 13, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 13, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) And remember, you get a one-year warranty on the camera for your $475.
blimey Posted October 14, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 14, 2010 Mine was just sent today for non CLA related issue but DUST inside the LCD has accumulated to a point of being annoying. I could have live with it but since the winter is coming and I wont be shooting anything until spring comes back, I might as well sent it. The dust behind the LCD does becoming annoying when you are viewing previews under the sun or strong lighting for instance. You will see every single dust particles...
