1961 - Leica at the Isle Of Man

Yesterday night I was reading an Italian magazine on classic bikes ("Motociclismo d'Epoca") : there was a long interesting article on the story of the Tourist Trophy, with lot of old pictures : this one , which depicts the famous English champion Phil Read, caught my attention for an "alien" reason... :)

1961, the magazine writes : the photographer has what I guess is a Leica M3 with Visoflex 2 and (I'd say) a "then new" Telyt 200 f4; enlarging doesn't clarify much more... :o (even the first pic is a detail...)

I am more uncertain about the OTHER camera the photog has at his neck... the pic is far from clear, but the cocking lever would suggest another M3 (not strange) : but the lens ? It's direct attached - no Viso - and is black and "long"... the Tele Elmarit 135 arrived in 1965... the previous 135s were silver (and thinner)... my only hipotesis is it's a Summicron 90 in black, rather uncommon, I think, in those years (but existed... Lager displays a black Summicron 90 of 1959). But the lens in the picture seems to me a bit too long to be a 90... does someone have some idea about ? As in the pictures of Beatles' performing posted few weeks ago, I like this kind of questions... ;)

my guess is a black summicron. I have a chrome one that dates from 1960 and the size (with the extendable hood) is the same.

As for that thing between his legs...PROBABLY his gossen, but judging from his positioning at the motorcycle track, you never know.

Right... I forgot the hood that adds a significant length when extended (and I even have one... :o... but is in screw mount and stands unused...)

Nice find Luigi!. Indeed it seems a black 90mm Summicron. I have a chrome one myself from 1960 and resembles its measures including the built in sunhood.

The small thing between the photogs' legs indeed seems to be a Gossen lightmeter, anyhow its leather box. I have 4 of them and it indeed has the same looks although I never wear it like in this picture :-).

Looks to me that the thing between his legs is a Weston Master, with the leather case... At least, looks very similar with the one I have already in my case! :D (in 1960 I think would be Master III. As the others, a great photometer).
