1.25x Non-Leica Magnifier on eBay

Anyone know about this item? Is it acceptable for occasional use? Thanks

Hi Don - I bought one of these for my M4 and I find it the greatest Leica accessory ever! If using a 50, it makes the M4 finder like an M3! And then of course take it off if you switch to a 35! Try that with an M3! You have to actually use the 1.25x to appreciate it - check Stephan Gandys comments on it! I can't say enough about this magnifier except someone will buy it!!!! Get it!

I've got 2 of the HK Supplies VF mags so I could keep one on each body strap. I had the Leica and bought the HKS for the 2nd body as it was a .85 and I only wanted the mag for using a 75 and 90. When I saw how it compared to the Leica I ordered another and sold the Leica. The difference paid for a PE M grip.

If the HKS one is not what you're seeing on ebay then I'd got to their online store and check out the prices. They're a pleasure to deal with. No relation of course.

I have the 1.25 HK models and it worked great on the M8 I used in Yosemite. It didn't seem any different than the Leica brand that was origianlly on that M8.

I ordered the HK .85 and it does not seem to improve the view in the viewfinder, just makes it smaller. In other words, if you have problems seeing the 28mm frames on a .72, it will not make your view any wider, just a smaller image. I don't have my M8 yet, but on my .85 m7, the 35mm framlines are not any better with the .85 mounted.

I'm glad to hear this cheaper version works fine. I have the original Leica magnifier that I purchased for my M7, but now that I have a second Leica, I think I'll go with the Non-Leica magnifier and save some bucks. I had been wondering if this alternative magnifier was any good and this thread just answered my question.

Cheers,

Thanks for the info robsteve. I had thought about getting the 0.85 for my M4 but I think I'll get an external finder instead.

  • 2 months later...

Reviving the old thread...sorry, have to throw my 0.02 cents (perhasp worth less though...)

I acquired HK magnifers - both x1.25 and x0.85 for go on my M6 Classic. The x1.25 was aimed specifically for my 90mm Elmarit-M, however now I developed the habit of leaving it on all the times for both 50mm 'cron and 90mm Elmarit. For 90mm lens its benefit is quite obvious, however, for an obstacles wearer like me, it makes 50mm lines slightly beyond of my view but very closeslu approaching the actual veiwfinder area and I like it.

The x0.85 I bought specifically for a 28mm lens that I intend to acquire in a foreseeable future.

For an eeyglasses wearer 28mm lines are far beyond the reach, however attaching that x0.85 HK one - they jump in residing like 35mm frame without the magnifier. Appeasr to be an excellent solution for 28mm lens (in particular if you wear eyeglasses).

For what it worth...

I also bought both the .85 & the 1.25 which work well.I use the .85 on my elmarit 28 & the 1.25 on thr 50 & 75 mm lenses. I initially felt that it would be a long time gettting the goods from Hong Kong to New Mexico but the package arrived about 2 weeks after the order at my door step just as advertised. Highly recommended

I have the Megaperls one which also has dioptic adjustment built in. Well made and only three days to arrive from Japan. Dirk at Megaperls also communicates from start to finish.

I then used the Aki-Asahi Eye Piece set on the magnifier to protect my glasses. These took four days from Japan.

Wilfredo, nobody has said this explicitly but the HKS magnifier does not have an adjustable diopter correction. Also, there is no thread to enable you to attach a correction lens. I found this out to my cost after purchase. They are however very well made.

My HK magnifier doesn't fit the eyepiece as well as the Leica one did. Something off on the pitch of the threads. It gos in about one turn, but does not screw in as firmly as the Leica. Anyone else notice this? No complaints about the quality, though. It works well.

Yes, mine also doesn't screw in more then about half revolution (M6) which was a bit less secure feeling at first, but must admit it fits snug and never felt off in continuous usage.

Megapearls 1.35 was my choice due to diopter adjustment. Very well made. My 1.25 Leica wouldn't accept the correction lenses, despite having a thread.

I have the Hong Kong version 1.25X. I tried it on my M6, and works nicely, but it still is not the same as using a good old M3. I'm able to focus faster and more accurate using the M3, so I keep my 50 Lux Pre-ASPH on the M3, and the 35mm King of Bokeh SOFA king on the M6.

I paid $50 for the magnifier, and it's well worth it.

Ohh and by the way, mine screws in nicely.
