aerogift Posted October 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all members here, I just received Leica M9 and what I found is the paper box inside was torn and there is stain on the Leica M9 box. Please see the attached pictures. After I took a couple shot, I found that there are something like dust on the picture. I tried to clean the sensor by using Rocket blower but I couldn't remove it. - Do you guys think these are dead pixel? - Is this normal condition when you receive brand new camera? - Does anyone have the same experience that sensor not clean? I'm thinking to return this camera to OpticsPlanet and I have to pay for shipping cost. This is so sad when I'm willing to pay $7000 for my lovely red dot. Thank you everyone for listening. Advertisement Posted October 5, 2010 Posted October 5, 2010 Hi aerogift, Take a look here Disappointed with Leica M9 QC. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Alnitak Posted October 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted October 5, 2010 Sounds to me like you got a used camera someone returned. Your pictures aren't showing up so i can't comment on the dust issue, but it's pretty common to have a good bit of dust on the sensor when the camera is new. aerogift Posted October 5, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted October 5, 2010 You can click on question mark. It will link to the pictures I would like to show. I don't know why I couldn't attached to my post. Thank you for your post reply. I can't sleep because I'm still thinking to return or keep it. I have been waiting for M9 for 2 months already. andybarton Posted October 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted October 5, 2010 The images aren't showing because you have linked to pages on your website, not images. Upload the images to this site, then everyone can see them. The marks on the sensor are dust spots. If you have been sold a used camera instead of a new one (I assume that you paid a new price for it), your complaint is against the dealer who sold it to you, not Leica or their Quality Control. matlep Posted October 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted October 5, 2010 Judging by the pictures, it has definitely been unpacked before. Return it to your dealer and demand a new one. And as Andy says, it´s probably not Leicas fault.
Doc Henry Posted October 5, 2010 Share #7 Posted October 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I agree with previous comments including Andy's opinion. I do not understand how you can sell a new camera, at the new price * (6995 USD) and the customer find dust inside (negligent or used camera ?) It's incredible ! Leica should withdraw the concession to this seller. You should quickly bring this camera to the seller by threatening to inform Leica. At what price have you pay your M9 ? * Leica Digital Cameras SALE Compact Digital Camera DISCOUNT Digital Camera Photography
chris_tribble Posted October 5, 2010 Share #8 Posted October 5, 2010 Have to agree - yet another demonstration that there's no such thing as a free lunch (and as far as I can see Optics Planet are not a Leica dealer - so I don't see how Leica can control this - or be held responsible for QA.). MODs - I'd recommend that this is moved to the customer forum - it doesn't relate to the M9 per se, but is a consumer issue.

chris_tribble Posted October 5, 2010 Share #10 Posted October 5, 2010 The OP mentions that he bought the camera from this dealer. I'm thinking to return this camera to OpticsPlanet and I have to pay for shipping cost. Chris, I agree...

No surprise because at over 5500 Euros or 7000 USD, you must be careful ! Henry
aerogift Posted October 5, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted October 5, 2010 Thank you everyone for your comments. This is cheering me up for being Leica M9 member. I apologized for posting in the forum which is not related. However, OpticsPlanet claimed that the package is from Leica and never opened. I hope I can get a good copy from B&H or Dale in next purchase.
andybarton Posted October 5, 2010 Share #13 Posted October 5, 2010 You won't go wrong with either B&H or Dale - two of the best dealers in the US, from what I have heard.
earleygallery Posted October 5, 2010 Share #14 Posted October 5, 2010 and as far as I can see Optics Planet are not a Leica dealer - so I don't see how Leica can control this - or be held responsible for QA.). They are listed on the Leica website. Probably a camera someone else ordered and returned for whatever reason. From what I've read on this site it seems that it's quite normal in the US to buy stuff mail order, play with it for a while, then return it for a full refund no questions asked. Great on the one hand if you're not sure about something, but bad news if you're the next customer in line! In the UK returns cannot be re-sold as new unless the box has not been opened/goods handled (although I've no doubt that some retailers will do so). Once you've opened something up you can only return it if it's faulty in some way. Just return it and ask for another - unopened - camera.
pico Posted October 5, 2010 Share #15 Posted October 5, 2010 [...] but it's pretty common to have a good bit of dust on the sensor when the camera is new. Jeff I've never, ever received a new camera with dust on the sensor. That is unacceptable. It might be a good idea to check the number of shutter activations just for evidence before returning it. If it's more than a dozen or so, it is probably used.

I have to say I've never received a new camera (of any brand) WITHOUT dust on the sensor. And as for Leica shutter actuations on a new body, when you've done the hex conversion, anything between 80 and 150 is the norm.
Xmas Posted October 7, 2010 Share #17 Posted October 7, 2010 Hi It is possible that either or both a) the dust was introduced by yourself when you fitted the lens the dust is lube flicked off the shutter mechanisms. The first is difficult to avoid even with film leicas, if you strip a lens to clean it internally you need a clean room. The second should not happen (according to MK/Solms) but has been observed, you will be able to distinguish dust from lube, one smears nicely, It soon stops after the shutter shakes itself dry it is a D camera and you need a clean kit. aerogift Posted October 15, 2010 Author Share #18 Posted October 15, 2010 Hello, I got another M9 from Dale, and see the quality I got!!! T_T Opened box? Yes, just open and found that the leather was pealed off. This is super sad for me. I think Leica Quality team should explain about this issue. Thanks, P.S. you can check from my web picture here http://aerogift.multiply.com/photos/album/40/Test#photo=
AlanG Posted October 15, 2010 Share #19 Posted October 15, 2010 I think Germans have been having problems with glue for a long time. (Even the WWII Volksjet came unglued.) The Linhof crests often come unglued too. And look at the red lens dots.
aerogift Posted October 15, 2010 Author Share #20 Posted October 15, 2010 I don't want to be very means but I'm now so sad. The package inside looks very nasty like I got it from a trash !!! At this moment, I don't want to complain the dealer since I found three copies I got were similar. Low quality Poor manufacturing and production. Another thing the serial number of M9 I got gave me a bit surprised by 03970010 (from Dale) and 03970011 (from OpticsPlanet). Unbelievable batch. Should I stop buying M9 or just accept what it is? How about the other friends here have the experience like? May I have your advice?
