So... "Should I take the M9 jump?"

If you have to ask the question, then the answer is NO, They are still in short supply, save them for those who need them... There are plenty of used M8's available. When the time is right you can upgrade.

I can't help but see the funny side of all this - a smart dealer or Leica itself should "give" lend Richard an M8.2 now so we, and, I imagine the many people who dip into this thread, can all get Richard's comparison of M8 & M8.2. I'm sure this thread is selling Leica's like you wouldn't believe.

While thinking along these lines I thought of someone wanting to stop the thread dead by giving Richard an almost unused M8.2 but the catch was that it was a white one!!

M.8 shutter sound: sounds louder to the shooter than the subject, it's an odd noise (recocking the shutter) my feeling is that it doesn't draw attention like a normal shutter sound simply because it doesn't sound anything like a camera being fired.

Also on the marketing side:- Somone could start an online donation project to raise the funds for Richard's M9, I can see a light image of the camera gradually filling up in full detail as the target gets reached - what we would really be watching for is the moment when he pays out the difference between what has been donated and the target.

As far as I know the differences in favor of the .2 are the silent shutter, sapphire glass on the LCD, different vulcanite and the black Leica dot and black fash-shoe.

Well, I wouldn't go as far as to say its a "silent shutter"...

Personally can't get too excited over the sapphire, not too crazy about the reduced max shutter speed. However, that Black Dot Red Dot thingy, comes up from time to time as an issue of great interest. YMMV!

Still close to a decision then, albeit another one. Maybe this thread could be renamed:

"Should I take the M8 jump!"

or

"Should I take the M8.2 jump!"

Mmmm.

Hi Mike!

C'est une bonne idée!

I must say that this thread hasn't moved much. I was hoping for it to be closer to 800 by know. What's happening! Everyone running out of gas/petrol. Go Go Go!

I did my bit and put down a few comments on the differences between the M8 and M8.2 that I could think of off the top of my head.

Why don't you compare the differences between the M8.2 and Nikon D700? or or D3 or newer D3S? ISO, shutter speeds, viewfinder, megapixels, number of shoots before changing the battery....:p

This thread takes all sorts of turns and twists...

For me the entire process is still pretty straightforward - or I just think it is. ;)

My week with the loaner M8 was my first experience with M/rangefinder photography. And I loved it. The different way of looking & shooting, the feel of the camera, everything. After the M8 my X1 is just not the same anymore. Regardless how good it is. Only the noise at higher ISOs from the M8 is a bridge for me to take.

There is a list of features and specs in favor of the M9 over the M8, no doubt about it. Full-frame, more pixels, improved layout and controls etc. But it also comes with a huge price tag. A price tag that I simply don't want to swallow.

I never do large prints and the M8 gives exactly the same 'M experience'. Besides the amount of pixels and FF/lens aspect, the M9 isn't really that much better than the M8 except for large prints. The sensors are identical except for the # of pixels. The much raved improved high ISO performance comes from (more) in-camera noise reduction from ISO 640 on.

As M8s go, the 8.2 is the one to have imo. So if I can get my hands on a good used M8.2, I'll go for a new 28 Elmarit f/2.8 ASPH that performed brilliantly on my loaner M8. Affordable in Leica terms, small, light and 35 with the crop. This setup will cost roughly 40% of the M9 + Cron 35 I had my sights on earlier. Definitely not the same but for me a jump into M photography I feel comfortable with.

Today I'm gonna have a look at a promising candidate. Keep you posted!

Richard.

Hi everybody outthere....

I can see not all have left the building:p Why? Because they are still sneaking around and can't keep their eyes at the other booring treads? or because this thread is becoming booring.. but.. they still keep in circles around the candy-bag? hoping that something odd is coming up to get the breakfast wrong in the throught....its allowed to leave the building...and its allowed to turn back...for free:)

thanks Richard, yes thats what I thought...but a clonky shutter could be an issue..even though it might sound like a starting lawnmover or something, I dont care about the screen etc. but IQ and shuttersound is an issue, and only the latter is a matter..I can understand...but yes while the poor of us will be waiting on the eastern crises come and ours ditto the settle down even a cheep M8 with a clonky shuttersound might get my dear lenses down the shelf and out in the cultivated nature outthere..somewhere....

meanwhile I might stay until Richard has posted some pictures from the M8.2....and Richard you must promise to tell which twist and processing you are doing with the pictures to make them lookalike M9/X1'ones...

and then...all your folks outthere, you might just start doing the weekend house-working, cleaning, walking with your wifes...etc....(and perhaps take some pictures you have to show us here)

:)

@Robert W et al: the decisionmaking process is all about setting your priorities right. Take for example this guy: http://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local-beat/Shooting-Victim-Went-Home-for-Lunch-Before-Going-to-Hospital-107048673.html

As for the - to some - disappointing length of this thread: don't criticize, participate! I'm doing the best I can. Richard is doing his part by remaining "close to a decision", but never actually taking one.

As for an M digital/D700 comparison: that's a high risk exercise of almost biblically abstract proportions. I'd have to think about that. May I inform you all in due course of the outcome of that process?

1. Do you believe Richard will post his buy decision within 12 hours?

Well within 12 hours!

Here is my new pride & joy. Sorry for the Nokia flash pic, it's only evidence. :)

My excellent Leica dealer - Nivo Schweitzer in Amsterdam - wasn't exaggerating when he said he would get a really nice s/h M8.2. It's beautiful and very well taken care of by the first owner. It's difficult to see any traces of real use at all. Only the bottom plate has some very tiny scratches. The rest of the camera is completely spotless!

Together with a brand new Elmarit-M 28 f/2.8 ASPH it didn't take long come to a very nice deal to trade in my X1 and get this beautiful M8.2.

Obviously I'm very happy with it and of to the pub now for a few beers and to show it to MikeD700

I can only say...

I drooled in my beer.

Then I whipped (or was it: wrestled) my D700 and 1.4/85G out of their hiding place and clobbered the M8.2 with high ISO's. A pub at dusk...

Congratulations Richard! Enjoy that camera for a long time!

Tnx All!

A pub at dusk? No biggie... This one is me shot by MikeD700 with my M8.2. He's obviously completely adapted to the lightning fast AF on his galactic Nikon starc(b)ruiser. Still not bad for a first attempt with a real camera Mike!

Congratulations Richard ...................and what is even better in terms of your OP the thread can continue until you get an M9!!

Mike - hiding place for a D700 in a pub, c'mon! by the time you've wrestled it out of where ever you keep it (a large but arguably inconspicuous suitcase?) many of the patrons would have left - sort of negates the high ISO in my book, then half, at least, of those people that were either too drunk to notice or had given up on caring would flee from the bar in terror the second it went off.

Now for the few souls that were left in the bar - they would pose for you assuming that you were guy that went from venue to venue taking snaps for a living. Or worse a private detective spying on some poor guy who was cheating on his wife.(or visa versa)

You'd be better off taking it to the ball game.(with a bigger lens)

Oh this thread has been good for me. Having graduated to Leica ownership during the couse of it I've noticed that I've already started to become a dyed in the wool, one eyed Leica missionary, its a great feeling - my hunch is that you'll be next, keep the Nikon for sport but get a Leica when you need to enjoy yourself.

Cheers Clive

a large but arguably inconspicuous suitcase?

LoL Clive! Living in the outback, all those crates of Foster's to finish, you must get pretty wacky from time to time. A Domke Ruggedwear Littlebitsmaller bag to precise; could be a little bit bigger if you ask me, D700, 85G and some stuff takes up some space.

Actually, look here at some recent D700 posts, still some people there... http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=1019802137

Cheers!

Mike - It is with some embarrassment that I have to admit that my first efforts under gallery lights with my M8 caught me out completely, see for yourself "magenta!!!" where it should have been black - I notice that Richard wisely invested in an IR cut filter before he started shooting (which brand?) (which is the best?)

I'm surprised at how many people wear synthetics.

I thought I'd been real smart setting WB manually from white card before the event started and was very pleased with myself but just over looked IR.

Yes, the Nikon does seem to take a reasonable snap. Am suffering today - self inflicted - you guessed right - beer.
