JWW Posted September 28, 2010 Share #21 Â Posted September 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have the 90mm preasph summicron and it's a good lens that you can find for a reasonable price but for portraits I end up using the 75mm summilux instead for the shallow DOF and it's wide open signature. Advertisement Posted September 28, 2010 Posted September 28, 2010 Hi JWW, Take a look here How often do you use a 90mm?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
delander †Posted September 28, 2010 Share #22  Posted September 28, 2010 The 90mm elmarit-M is a great lens in my view and on top of that is cheap. I use it a lot for protraits even in the street, the extra FL is a bonus over the 75.  I often take 28, 35, 50 and 90 as my working lens set.  Jeff
delander †Posted September 28, 2010 Share #23  Posted September 28, 2010 Here is a street protrait taken with the Elmarit 90-M F4. Cropped left and right. Great lens, good lens hood and not too large so it does not attract attention.  Jeff Welcome, dear visitor! MPJMP Posted September 28, 2010 Share #24 Â Posted September 28, 2010 I own 28, 35, 50, and 90. The 90mm Elmarit was the last lens added and I got it for a steal on eBay. It is, by far, my least used lens. I find it limiting in that you are required to maintain a certain distance from your subject. That said, it can be a great portrait lens, and despite its infrequent use a few of the better photos on my office wall were taken with a 90mm Elmarit. Doug A Posted September 28, 2010 Share #25 Â Posted September 28, 2010 I recently bought a 90/4 collapsible Elmar so I wouldn't have to carry the Nikon F and 105/2.5 Nikkor in addition to the M2 and VC 35/2.5 when I walk down to the river to photograph the passing boats. The 90mm focal length is perfect for that application, but that's about all I use it for. I used a 50mm lens for portraits when I was shooting with the Nikon and with a IIIf and I am still doing that with the M2. Â With the 90mm Elmar replacing the 105 Nikkor and Lightroom 3's Lens Corrections function replacing the PC Nikkor I am finally able to retire the Nikon with it's noisy mirror. feyeping Posted September 28, 2010 Share #26 Â Posted September 28, 2010 There are occasions which require the use of a 90mm lens. However, as the usage is relatively low, I tend to bring a TE (thin). Yes, it does have a tendency to flare. But, it is so small and light that I can slip it in my jeans pocket. LuxBob Posted September 28, 2010 Share #27 Â Posted September 28, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) There is something about H C-B that intensely irritates me. Someday someone will say something and I will realise why. But he did believe in one lens, possibly he did not know how to change it and I have to say that I am much the same. The 35mm does for just about everything. I see things in 35mm and I move to fit with 35mm. It is my focal length. Maybe I miss shots but I also think that I probably find more. On my DSLR I use a zoom but that is a different story.
kanzlr Posted September 28, 2010 Share #28 Â Posted September 28, 2010 let me put it this way: If I was still as much into tele as I was a few years ago, I would have kept my DSLR and stayed away from the M. Â For occasional use 90mm are ok, but a SLR with a good matte is just that much easier to work with for lenses longer than 50mm.
LuxBob Posted September 28, 2010 Share #29 Â Posted September 28, 2010 Delander - Great picture. For me it begs the question; what's the story?
wda Posted September 28, 2010 Share #30 Â Posted September 28, 2010 I thought long and hard about this question not long ago. My solution was to go for the current 90mm Macro which has the merit of adding an extremely useful close-focus capability. It also performs very well for more conventional subjects. timd. Posted September 28, 2010 Share #31 Â Posted September 28, 2010 "Do you use it enough to justify buying it?" Â i used it seldomly enough to justify selling it. 4 weeks in laos and vietnam, 20 rolls of film, 4 shots with the 90mm - just because i felt i had to use it since i had been carrying it around for so long. delander †Posted September 29, 2010 Share #32  Posted September 29, 2010 Delander - Great picture. For me it begs the question; what's the story?  David Icke, one time TV presenter, professional footballer is now a sort of general protestor who often speaks to a small crowd of followers gathered in various parts of London. This one was taken on College Green at Westminster, on the day that the new UK coalition government was formed. I photographed him between the shoulders of those standing in front of me.  Jeff
cheewai_m6 Posted September 30, 2010 Share #33 Â Posted September 30, 2010 never. not my style. don't know why i bought it.
ady Posted September 30, 2010 Share #34 Â Posted September 30, 2010 I used it on film much more than on my M9. I dont have a 75, but I use my 50 Lux more and more and Crop. Adi
nikau Posted September 30, 2010 Share #35 Â Posted September 30, 2010 I have a Canadian Summicron 90 and use it quite a bit, although I prefer to use 90mm and longer lenses on one of my two Leica reflex bodies. If I did it again I'd return to the wonderfully compact Tele-Elmarit.
H. James Wolf Posted September 30, 2010 Share #36 Â Posted September 30, 2010 I use it frequently - an ideal length for pet portraits. It's also ideal for use at the emergencies I cover as our volunteer fire company's photographer. The new 90 macro elmar is a wonderful lens and lets me get a large image size with butterflies and other small creatures. I have had a 90 since I began using Leicas more than 30 years ago; with the Nikons, the equivalent is a nice 85 1.4.

andybarton Posted September 30, 2010 Share #38 Â Posted September 30, 2010 I don't use a 90 often enough to justify having two 90mm lenses.

Time will tell. Like most lenses if you do not set out to use them, they remain idle. I am a great believer in going out with one main lens and a reserve and just looking for appropriate pictures. It is difficult to 'mix and match', on such projects, with focal lengths too far apart.
delander †Posted September 30, 2010 Share #40  Posted September 30, 2010 That's one word for him... Google him to find out what he's really about  OMG I see what you mean, but I've never followed his 'career' and was too busy taking photos to hear what he said. I have several other photos of him at the same event, but just to emphasize how I love my 90mm elmarit-M and the quality it can produce I hope you dont mind if I post just one more shot taken at the same gathering of UK 'great and the good'. This is Lance Price, one time a member of No10's staff as adviser to then PM Tony Blair. Some UK members will recognise the back of the interviewer as the BBC's James Naughtie.  Probably at f2.8 or f4.0 (guess by Capture One). Cropped all around.  Jeff Welcome, dear visitor!
