M7 & Flash issues

Hi I recently bought an M7. Up until I have been using Nikons, I have a couple of Nikon flash Units and I wanted to know if I can use these flash units with M7. Do I just connect these with a cable or are there issues with voltages. Thanks in advance.

Hi, it all depends upon which flash units you are intending to use. Most recent ones should be OK as far as voltage goes. Older flashes should be checked, or only used with a 'Safe-sync' (Or equivalent.) in order to protect the camera. Do remember though, that you will not be able to use the Nikon TTL modes on your M7. If the flash gun has a sensor, you will be able to use 'A' mode, otherwise you may only be able to use 'M' mode. Flashes such as the SB-400 cannot be used though, as they only work with Nikon TTL.

If you want TTL, the easiest way is to buy a Leica SF24D -- and a Nikon SC 15, 17 or 19 cable for greater flexibility. As for using Nikon-branded flashes, Nicole's information is correct -- it's A or M only.

 

Even so, a 'system' cable would be a good addition to your kit. Buy a subscription to Sean Reid's excellent site (http://www.reidreviews.com) and read his piece on "Using Flash" which all by itself is worth the price of admission!

I have a Nikon flash Sb-16 for my Nikon Fm cameras and an SF24D and Metz 40-MZi with 3502 adapter for my M7's. Either the Sf24D or Metz can be used in AUTO with good results on the M7 but since you paid for TTL flash, I would use the TTL Mode and a dedicated suitable flash for your M7.

Be aware that the SF24D is somewhat limited in that the head does not move but it matches the M7 in size and does a good job. The Metz units of course are superb but large.-Dick
