I recently added an X1 to my other Leica compacts, yet I can hardy value it as just another compact. I am very happy with the first results. I particularly like the following:

- The prime Elmarit ASPH, a lens of the M philosophy.

- The 36mm focal length, universal and ideal for documentary shots..

- The long-time-proved aspect ratio of 3:2--and just that!

- The large CMOS sensor; imagine it along with a Summicron in some future X model.

- The sufficient 12MP that won't overload the hard disk; after all, one wouldn't print 20'' by 30'' from an X1.

- The VERY usable high ISO's, up to 3200 like a TMZ film.

- The color settings, like choosing among color and B&W films.

- The LACK of video function--at last, a real camera for photographers!

I also believe I can understand Leica's decisions as regards some points on X1 that drew complaints. For instance, positioning of a retractable flash unit where a retractable viewfinder could have been placed, as well as the JPEG format and the AA filter, must all target at the casual user/tourist who will never bother to Photoshop extensively.

Paul, we enjoy this camera tremendously too, so welcome to the community.

And yes, it natural to be excited when you first get hold of it, I did too. Something about this little gem.

Post your photos soon, and enjoy your new toy.:D

You mean it does not export DNG raw for $2000. I don`t know true or not, but totally insane if true. But a $2000 fixed lens camera with a lens that jumps in and out just makes it a very expensive P&S in any case. But if people like it, so be it. Just not for me.

I would pay maybe $500 of this one with the Leica name, $499 without. Just my opinion of course.

No wonder. it's slow and the lens jumps out and there is no raw export. No wonder I saw this camera on discount at $899.95 when the original retail was $2,000. Shame on Leica.

I heard reports that the M9 is now secretly going for $3,000.

Judging from how this thread is going...probably going to be shut soon...

Deng...deng..deng...Another one that bites the dust...

Apologies, I had no intention to initiate a boring thread. In fact, when I listed the good points in X1, I was implying that Leica reminds us that the features of a serious digital camera must still root into the well tested concept of an M.

Thanks for your good words.

Wasnt referring to your thread, so no need for apology.:) It's not boring either, or maybe all thread are.

My X1's lens jumping in and out would make me jump up and down and pull my hair, but not of joy.......

Rumors are that M9 users with bad luck had lenses falling off their M9, blame the camera.......
