D-LUX 4 Owners: Who's Upgrading to the D-LUX 5?

Jut bought the LX5 and like it, some nice evolutionary improvements make it a much more rounded shooter than its predecessor. I wanted to like its predecessor, the LX3, but all in all, it was to fiddly a camera for me.

Better zoom range, better UI with dedicated iso button, quite faster AF, the 1:1 format and step zoom among the more important improvements. And lastly, the Pana has a really nice grip. To compare prices one might want to include the cost of an after market handgrip to the D-Lux5 price.

High iso seems to be close to one stop better/more useful. Set the auto iso to 800 max, versus 400 with the LX3.

Enjoy your new camera! Thanks for one stop better ISO confirmation. Good to know from a previous owner of d-lux4/lx3. Although, ISO was available also on lx3 as you can set on fn button. Step zoom it's nice but could be done from firmware un the previous model. I think they where either lazy, or eager to sell better the new model.

start to think about on a upgrade .... but I still believe that an x100 is a better choice.

True, LX5 reminds me of my own D-Lux4 grip (2 years old already):

I would like to see if some of you would be interested in similar grip for D-Lux5. D-lux4 grip won't be compatible with D-Lux5.

Cheers

Richard

I am in a strange situation: I may be compelled to upgrade because my DLUX4 disappeared during my last journey together will all the photographs I had on a 16 GB card which was inside the camera. It will entirely depend on the insurance company .... and on the fact that the DLUX4 camera is becoming increasing more difficult to find in UK.

That said, I love the incremental improvement approach: if a camera is nearly perfect you only want to improve on the small issues which need perfecting. I think this is the approach Leica used in this case, which I very much like. I think we would have preferred some more radical changes in this or that area, but every camera is a compromise between conflicting requirements (not last, costs) and a great camera is the one that finds the right balance.

I think Leica has delivered with DLUX4 and from the specs seems to have delivered with the DLUX5.

I also like the B&W output on DL4... But I never tried on 3200... How is it? I use 80!

Hi Claw,

Here is a shot I took at 3200 B&W in a beautiful tea room in Paris.

5.1 mm (24 mm equivalent), F2, 1/200s, ISO 3200, shot in raw and converted to jpeg using Capture One 4.8.3 (jpeg at 85%, with reduction of width to 640px), no post processing

I had to set the saturation to 0 in CaptureOne to have the same B&W I had in camera.

The shot is not perfect, but it gives you an idea of the performance.

PS: If you need a high resolution picture just post a message.

Will all the accessories (add-ons) for the d-lux 4 fit the d-lux 5? I'm thinking lens adapters for wide, tele, etc., polaroid lenses, evf and flash? Or will I have to purchase all those again?

Thanks for your kind response.

To my knowledge there was no EVF for the D-Lux4/LX3. So that is one extra you will have to buy.

Mine should be here Friday. As I was placing my order I "accidentally" put an X1 with spare battery in my shopping cart, but then removed it and just got the DL5. Still, a part of my brain is saying that my $800 should have gone toward an X1. I suppose if I change my mind I can always return the DL5 for a REALLY BIG upgrade.

I Know how do you feel. I also lost my D Lux-4 last Fri day. But no photo has been lost. Me n my wife was going to cover the 3rd day of the Durga Puja Festival an on the way some son of **** stole my wife`s hand bag and ran away by a cab... after diappiaring we realized that my D Lux-4 was in her bag.

Its not possible to buy a Leica here in Bangladesh. I have to purchase another Leica from Singapore. So I was thinking to bring the new D Lux-5 but that one will come to Singapore at the end of November, so I decided to Bring the D Lux-4 again.

After loosing my D Lux-4 I found that I just loved that camera. The new one probably arriving next Thurs day.

As long as I can continue to take photographs like this with my D-LUX4, I won't be upgrading in a hurry! Dynamic B/W, Aperture priority mode, JPEG

For me the D Lux 5 would be better. Just hate that I recently bought the D Lux 4 :eek:The electronic viewfinder is a big plus for me. I have the standard glass viewfinder accessory for the d4, but it is only good to frame in 24mm, or 35mm. Greater zooms are just a guess. Also the Lightroom is a great bonus. I just have to get my d4 on eBay and bite the bullet. Oh well...

Anyone have an idea on what the Electronic Viewfinder would cost?

Dale Photo shows the Leica EVF for the D-Lux 5 priced at $349.00. Amazon is selling the Panasonic DMW-LVF1, which looks exactly the same, for $124.95. I don't know if there's any difference in the two models, but it is sort of astonishing that the Leica-branded model is way more than twice as expensive.
