New: V-Lux 2

Recommended Posts

I got a Canon t1i/500D with kit lens and 55-250mm lens and a whole bag of crap..

Now this camera has really got me thinking to Sell all my camera gear to get this V-Lux 2

The DSLR camera I have is a money pit..The quality is ok, but it's not amazing..

Seems like every type of photography I want to do needs a different lens..

I wanted zoom, had to buy a zoom, needed a wide angle, got it with the kit. Now I want more zoom, better wide angle image quality and Macro and a faster standard lens.. That is just too much money and I am not a professional making money..

80% of my photography is Nature and wildlife and landscape scenery..

Will the image quality of this new camera be better then what I have now with my cheaper lenses?

And what things would I not be able to do with this camera that I can with my Canon?

I would love to just take a good camera with a good tripod out on a hike, not a heavy bag full of crap and lenses..

I think many of us are in this same boat as me.

Also, is Leica really just a Panasonic? Better build quality or? what's going on with these things I hear about lol

The image quality from the higher prices Leica cameras are absolutely amazing and some of the best I have ever seen.

That has what opened my eyes for me to discover this camera as a possible options for me

Some years ago (pre-M8) I had a Leica Digilux 2 - Three megapixels as I recall, w. a nice zoom and an inconvenient boxy shape. One of my projects w. that camera was a series called "The Signs of Alameda" - neon signs from the 30's, 40's and 50's, we have many good ones in this town. I made prints and had a little show of the photos. Prints were mostly 11x14. Some are still up on my studio wall and they look mighty nice.

Point being - if a 3mp camera could make such nice and printable images what might be expected from the new v-Lux and the newer technology? Seems worth the wait and worth a try.

In LFI of this month is a review of the V-lux2. It is honestly critical for a Leica-magazine. When I read between the lines I would guess that for wildlife it is ok, but for landscape the sensor is too small and too noisy above 160ISO. The camera is praised for its relative strength in video-work, but in stills the D-lux5 is better for the same price.

In ignorance how does this "better" Leica's previous model for comparison? Someone posted it would be great as it would allow them to dump all their big Canon gear. That's precisely why I bought my 'Ms" and "Rs". Yesterday I sent my Canon 40D in for service. While there at the UPS (brown) depot, the gal handling my shipment said she had bought a Canon, model unknown, and has had nothing but problems. But this is a Leica forum not the big "C". So I also have the little Leica C-LUX 2, with its vario-elmarit aspherical. I bought it shortly after it was introduced and has performed flawlessly. Of course on the bottom plate, in two places, it says made in Japan. Then there is also the "Leica Camera Germany". It has the red Leica dot on the front and when shutting down a big Leica dot. So I go back to my original question. What does the latest 'V ' or 'D' model have over the previous?, or even mine?

Right now I have a M8 with a 35 & 50. Also I have a Canon 20D with a 100-400, but the Canon gear weighs a ton. I am off to South America in a month, and I am not too keen on bringing my M8(rain, dirt, trauma) so I have been looking at the D Lux 5 and the D lux 2. The 2 has a better zoom distance for wildlife, but the 5 is a lot smaller. So I am kind of at a loss. I would love to hear any advice. Thanks, Jim

Sorry I meant the V Lux 2

Depends on what you are planning to do:

1. old men in dark cafe's or

2. nature and safari in bright and shiny weather; V-lux 1 and 2 are ideal safari, not-available-light, camera's.

If it's the first I would take my M8
