MP3

My sense is that the paint job on the MP3 is a bit better, but that's about it. My MP is five years in use and looks far worse than the MP3 which after two years in use still looks pretty new. OTOH I could have a really poorly painted MP...

Well, I think the MP3 looks gorgeous, but I'll be buying a regular black MP instead as I don't want/need a Leicavit, and I've already got the new 50 lux reserved.

...agreed, aymoon. Get the MP3 if you can afford to take the hit. There is absolutely nothing rational about Leicas.

dpp, thank you for posting that photo.

I was comparing it to a Plain Jane BP, and like that they don't have "off" engraved next to bulb. I really like the way the top deck has been recontoured to allow window frames, I'd really like that deck on my camera.

The plug or whatever it is over a standard film counter window is kinda bleh. I wish Leica would make the shutter release in BP brass and let it brass like the rest of the camera. Mine was an Ex+, now a happy beater. I'f I had the money I'd like to have an MP3.

I have no fashion sense, but camera aesthetics can be important, no?

Thanks again for posting the pic-jac

This can easily be done, just send it in to Leica Customer Service. Before I sold my MP, I had the shutter release ring changed to black paint, and the hot shoe changed to black (chrome). Also the covering was changed to vulcanite and had the viewfinder masked to only 35mm, 50mm and 90mm frame-lines.

The MP3 is a milestone in the family of special leicas. She combines the fascinating outer of the MP with the inner value of the actual MP.

I love my back lady- posted it often enough here in this forum.

I think the price of the package is o.k., if everything works quite well and the lens is fine.

Use it like I do and do not put here in a vitrine, she loves to go out.

The MP3 is essentially a gussied up MP. I think collectors bought most of them but a small number of members here use theirs. Apart from a few exterior differences it's just a regular MP and the most useful difference is the solitary framelines.]

The other difference, I think, is that there is no marked Off position on the shutter dial. I don't know if the meter is off when set at B, as on the MP, or whether like the M6 it will switch on whenever the shutter release is partly depressed. I can, perhaps, understand leaving out the word 'Off' to hide its modernity, but the battery compartment cover is a bit of a give away! I have to admit, I like the old style frame counter, though not enough to make me do without 75mm framelines.

...take a look at the shutter speed dial, Chris - the usual "OFF" marking found on a regular MP has been omitted to accommodate the shutter speed dial retaining screw, which in turn had to be moved from its usual 1/4s position, so that a "faux" Leicameter notch could be inserted in that position on the shutter speed dial (did someone just mutter "style over substance"?). All you need now is a mint functional Leicameter MC to doubly guarantee your exposures are spot on, eh? ;)

Just so we are clear, the built-in exposure meter on the MP3 is (as in the regular MP) switched off in the B position.

I have a black paint MP3 kit. The 50 is getting seriously brassed from heavy use on my black M3 but the body is in great shape. I accidentally pushed in the viewfinder window in Yosemite so DAG fixed that and smoothed out a notchy shutter release. Now it sees 2-5 rolls of Kodachrome 25 per day and will until the end of the year.

I think it is a great camera but I got the deal of the century on the entire kit back in 07 so that is why I even have it.
