elbonedeedo Posted February 16, 2011 Share #121 Posted February 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) A manual camera, yes maybe a little, but that is definitely not a wise decision to buy an X1 or its strong points, it is apparent that you are a new bee to Leica, and the X1 is probably? the first leica camera you have ever owned, based on your (28 posts) made on this forum.New to Leica, sure, but not new to cameras or photography. What's the big deal? I like it because it's a camera and not a gadget, as expressed earlier. Didn't like my other compacts because there was too much menu involved. And IQ clearly was the biggest influencer, if not expressly called out. Why do you care any way, it's clear you don't like the camera. That's fine, it's your choice. Advertisement Posted February 16, 2011 Posted February 16, 2011 Hi elbonedeedo, Take a look here Will X1 Values Plummet When Leica Releases New EVIL Camera?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest stnami Posted February 16, 2011 Share #122 Posted February 16, 2011 Ed I think we overcook the camera part, I have been guilty just as most are. Chatting to David Harvey (from magnum fame) he uses a GF1 and loves the little critter with the 20 and a VF, it is the simplicity of use, reasonable response time of the GF1 and little to no irritations that are the keys to taking photos. This is where there is that loss with the X1, fuji will be faster and efficient. As the prices of the X1 drop I will probably pick one up for taking photos of Carl Andre's artwork;)
h00ligan Posted February 16, 2011 Share #123 Posted February 16, 2011 I don't party with a camera , just party heh. Well I gave up drinking, capturing others in altered state is fun times on the recount. Ed I think we overcook the camera part, I have been guilty just as most are. Yes, I clearly am guilty of this. And I am trying to be better about it. My issue is that when starting out, I made bad choices in gear. I believe I have a much stronger understanding now of what my needs actual are.. and frankly they're more modest than I thought... So I'm trying to retool now that I have a better understanding and really focus on learning more of the art than the gear.. this I think is where the x1 excels.. I don't have to focus on a lot of settings..however, I do need af that can work in spontaneous moments, and for now the x1 doesn't have that. I get that I should have returned it, or done more research.. I'm just guilty of being too new at things to know up front.. and I'm sure I'll continue to make gear mistakes, but hopefully less of them.

andybarton Posted February 16, 2011 Share #125 Posted February 16, 2011 The internet is a fantastic tool in locating predators, and the like, don't you think?? Indeed it is... Thanks to everyone who has reported the abusive poster overnight (here) He (for it is a he and a serial known troublemaker, banned in the past) has now been dealt with appropriately. h00ligan Posted February 16, 2011 Share #126 Posted February 16, 2011 Mind you if you end up with say ten great shots from a camera purchase gone ape shit it is probably worth it Yah, but I have to remember that I need to compare myself to myself.. otherwise none of my gear purchases would be worth it. You are also more reserved in the gear acquisition - I'm hoping to get there... allow some others to beta test in the future (he says with an x100 on order - I'm hopeless). Guest stnami Posted February 16, 2011 Share #127 Posted February 16, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Despite the hype you will be safe with the X100..................... that is one camera that I knew about some time ago. Sometimes friends are useful in these pitfalls of life ps tweak your pp abilities and all will be sweet despite the usual rumblings
h00ligan Posted February 16, 2011 Share #128 Posted February 16, 2011 Yah, I had that initial reaction, but I started a thread over at dpreview showing how easily the x100 shots can be brought to life. Clearly fuji marketing is doing a good job, but no doubt the hype will lead to maybe 'more' of the typical rumbling. It certainly looks like a great camera.. and while no camera is perfect, i'm excited about it. Thanks for the input.
Guest stnami Posted February 16, 2011 Share #129 Posted February 16, 2011 As for me I am not excited about it and that to me is a positive:cool: ...... along the way it will be something to keep just because of what it is. That second hand X1 that I bother to get one day will be one of those like the epson, the D2, the DP1, the Oly C5050 etc ....
h00ligan Posted February 16, 2011 Share #130 Posted February 16, 2011 Do you get excited by gear? What was the last camera that 'did it' for you... I know you have and use a large number.. but has anything come out recently? I'm interested to see the next gen of FF from canikon as well.. but i think they'll get even closer and more difficult to choose between. Any interest in their offerings in the mirrorless arena? I'm interested to see if leica keep the 35mm or move to 50.. speed up the lens, camera for the x2, but I don't see us finding out in the next year or so. By the way, are you a fan of Joel Peter Witkin?
Guest stnami Posted February 16, 2011 Share #131 Posted February 16, 2011 Never heard of Joel Peter Witkin but no ....... though I like René Magritte's paintings Cameras not really................ shooting images, putting final touches to books, exhibitions, PP work and printing yai that is great stuff I got four new tyres for my subaru brumby for the first time, usually they are seconds that I buy....... that's pretty exciting stuff. I get to borrow a heap of cameras but take very few worthwhile images with them .......... I have a Polaroid SX-70 and some Fade to black film that is exciting stuff ps not my image just from impossible's site http://www.the-impossible-project.com/ "Most exciting of all, Polapremium now have the unique Polaroid Fade To Black film. This film is new and exclusive, and was one of the last film productions that Polaroid made in Enschede before the factor closed earlier this year. Polapremium did not want to release this treasure before they knew exactly what it does, how it reacts and what can be done with it. So after a long period of testing they are finally ready to launch… What is so special about this unique film is that shortly after taking the photo the Polaroid transforms into individual stages of light bluish greens through to darker brownish reds, before slowly gathering more and more unusual textures and streaks until it turns completely black. Within 12 hours the film reaches an incredibly beautiful darkness. Within 24 hours the film is transformed into black completely… Polapremium describe this amazing effect; “What may sound scary and destructive in fact is a beautiful materialisation of some of Polaroid’s unique characteristics: unpredictable results, unique and independent picture development and the nostalgic component of chemicals darkening over time.”
