DWHITE25 Posted September 14, 2010 Author Share #21 Posted September 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Feedback here has been great. Thanks again! I hit a snafu though. After ordering the X1 from a reputable online store (I couldn't find one locally) they sent me an e-mail stating that the item is on backorder until mid-October. It's not a huge wait, but the X1 has been nearly impossible for me to track down (along with every other Leica it would seem). Is scarcity a part of Leica's marketing plan or are they just in that much demand? I was hoping to get comfortable with it prior to a trip to VA to shoot some Fall shots in the mountains. Anyone know where I can get my hands on one now?
Advertisement Posted September 14, 2010 Posted September 14, 2010 Hi DWHITE25, Take a look here X1 or not. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted September 14, 2010 Share #22 Posted September 14, 2010 There is a list of all registered Leica dealers on their website. I'd just look up the ones nearest to you and start phoning round.
BB W Posted September 14, 2010 Share #23 Posted September 14, 2010 DWHITE25, I don't know where you live but yes, do phone and don't give up. You might also want to use this site: NowInStock.net Product Availability Tracker and In Stock Notification System I found it extremely helpful. If memory serves me, they let me know just a little bit faster than my B&H Photo alert...though it could have been neck and neck. I am still in love with my X1. It's small, it's well made, the controls are great and right where they should be, in my opinion. Good luck with finding yours in time!

ravinj Posted September 14, 2010 Share #25 Posted September 14, 2010 No need to pay third parties on Amazon who are charging ridiculous prices. Try Tamarkin Camera or Kurland Photo. They both are good dealers. I got mine from Tamarkin and as luck would have it, got another piece from Kurland a few days later as I had placed orders at both of them. Kurland took the X1 back, no haggle, no argument.
BB W Posted September 14, 2010 Share #26 Posted September 14, 2010 Although I haven't used Tamarkin to buy from, yet, they are very quick to respond and have a great reputation. I bought my X1 through B&H Photo, who also are quite well regarded and have an excellent return policy. I think when one is spending this much money that a good return policy is key. Seems a very good deal if it can be shipped cross continent and you don't mind buying used: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/market/listing/2540/LEICA_X1_mit_Zubehr_neuwertig.html extra battery, grip, viewfinder is included. richam Posted September 23, 2010 Share #29 Posted September 23, 2010 ...forget the X1 and get two big-boy M9s, DWHITE25. I would also recommend purchasing *all* of the following lenses: 21/1.4 ASPH 35/1.4 ASPH 50/0.95 ASPH 90/2 APO ASPH There is enough in this outfit for you to grow into - let us know how you get on (with the auditors as well). And welcome to the forum. Don't forget to add a sensor cleaning kit -- about $200 or so. Where there are interchangeable lenses, there will be dust. Also, you need to block out enough time from your trip or vacation to take care of this chore, plus some additional time in Photoshop or equivalent software checking and correcting dust spots. richam Posted September 23, 2010 Share #30 Posted September 23, 2010 The beauty of the M's focusing is in zone focusing... on a nice sunny day with a wide angle... you preset focus and then go shoot... it's better than autofocus for the most part. Why can't this be done with the X1? Set the ISO to 400 or 800, aperture to f8 or f11, manual focus around 2-3m or on some spot in the middle of the DOF range. Seems that this would work out the same as M zone focusing.

richam Posted September 23, 2010 Share #34 Posted September 23, 2010 richam -- wonderful photos, were these all done with an x1? Actually very few X1. I just got it a few months ago. The website is mostly comprised of MP & M7 film images plus Digilux 1, Digilux 2, D-Lux 3, D-Lux 4, and M8 digital shots. I'm still very impressed with the X1 and just posted another hand held HDR Mytikas Sunset image in the Landscape and Travel forum.
BB W Posted September 23, 2010 Share #35 Posted September 23, 2010 Michael, thank you so much for all three links - impressive, thoughtful and very moving photographs. I enjoyed your "handheld HDR" as well - what a view!

Guest X1s Posted October 14, 2010 Share #37 Posted October 14, 2010 And your verdict is? NOT.... emma
BB W Posted October 14, 2010 Share #38 Posted October 14, 2010 Thanks for letting me know, emma. Each camera is not for everyone. I was in love with my X1 and still have serious pangs for it. I recently sold "her" because I felt that as much as I adored the image quality and the size of the camera and the simplicity of the straightforward controls and just about everything else...I decided that for me the time to sell the camera was now, and decided not to wait. Cameras are very personal. For me, the X1 would have been close to perfect if it had had the exposure and focus separate and would have been stellar, again for me, if it had had either a built in top notch viewfinder that showed the settings... I bought the X1 knowing that it had neither of these things and probably would have held on to it if I hadn't read about the Fuji X100. Please, no throwing of tomatoes here - I know that the Fuji X100 is not "real" yet. I could have held on to the X1 and enjoyed it for more time, but decided to make my move. I do miss it and may end up feeling more remorseful down the line. Time will tell. Who knows, maybe in another year Leica will have the X2.
