Chris,

Ignore the signal-to-noise ratio if you can. Please look at, and use, the Wiki. It is specifically there to provide an accessible platform for knowledge such as yours.

Regards,

Bill

On this point I agree with bill-

Do you understand what the Wiki is?

YOU write it. YOU contribute content. YOU shape it. YOU put in detail about the X1.

*shakes head*

I wrote some informative prose about the X1 and tried SIX times to add it to the Wiki and it never stuck. And I followed all the rules.

I have never seen anything remotely like this on any motorcycle related forum as on this forum about 'elite' and exquisite Leica cameras and photography.

Unbelievable... :eek::o

Not my experience. I could show you nasty, vile, threatening posts from a self-described motorcycle god who believes that bullying people is the way to go. I think Hunter Thompson would also have something to say about that topic.

Here's the thing, some may like the wiki, others not so much and there is controversy as to accuracy of info there frequently.

Bottom line is this forum has loads more info, tons of photos for anyone who cares to look. Much much more than what wiki has to offer. If we have to update wiki, why waste the time in this case, there's ready info here on this thread and in the entire forum, much much more than wiki with a tremendous head-start.

Some like me may like to stick mainly to one great forum, with the occasional browsing of other sites.

I like this forum for it openness and all, but condescending tones automatically evokes an appropriate response.

By the way, David, is everything ok your end? Read the news about the quake. Wishing you and everyone around you well:)

Thanks phancj, not good. Central city is locked down, people are numbed, many have lost homes and businesses, we are lucky no lives have been lost. Seems slightly surreal to be debating Leica minutiae, but a good diversion. :)

X1 proved handy, but as usual M6 proved faster. Ruggedness, reliability, and technical quality are what count with Leica.

Dunno whats with the weather and calamities, praying things will return to normal quickly for your city.

I read this news and cannot help but recognize the severity and frequency of these disruptions in so many places....not a very nice thought if you extrapolate the situation.

I dunno about the M6 given film and no option of instant review, though it may be a nice surprise if images turn out great, like unwrapping a present.

Here's praying for your continued safety and happiness, and all those around you.

...so if you have an issue over the accuracy, you can improve it.

...and in a few months - weeks - time you won't be able to find this thread, or that. You won't remember where you spotted that nugget of information. The Wiki is a classic example of something that increases in value the more you use - and contribute - to it. It is structured so that information is easy to find, again and again.

Critically, it enables you to make your knowledge available to others in an indexed form.

If you don't see the value of that to yourself and others, carry on...

Regards,

Bill

...I salute your patience and doggedness, young Palmer. This is a dark place. Sheesh.

It's not so much as an issue over it, but the structure of wiki also is something I may not like. I like a more "forum" environment for sharing of photos and ideas. It's personal preference, really.

If I find something important I document it with screenshot or other means.

I repeat myself, given the wealth of info and more importantly photos on this site, I think it will take ages for wiki to be updated to this extent, by then maybe I will be on the X2. If someone is willing to document the important parts (minus non-info banter including our infamous exchanges haha) I think I will be most happy to contribute accordingly and do my best at updating. As it stands the info on the X1 in wiki is rudimentary at best and it is indeed a mountainous task to update it.

End of the day, it's all about personal needs and wants, no point thinking which site is better, or what is the best way to go. There's no real clear unanimous answer anyway.

I've gotten things into Wikipedia, but very few. From what I've seen, if you see something glaringly missing, and it's non-controversial, you may be able to get it in. But you can probably forget about anything else.

May I suggest you add a new thread where you can discuss the merits of Wiki versus this forum in greater detail: rather than hijack this thread for that discussion.

Your OP contains the phrase:

the reason for this thread - to summarize what appears to be the primary topics in this forum in one place, as there appears to be considerable duplication of issues and solutions amongst a number of topics

I think the advice to collect those valuable and potentially hard to find topics in a medium which can be organised and edited much better than a forum quite in keeping with your intent. Even if it's out of the box with respect to your expectation.

It is good advice and well worth thinking about.

I don't dispute that it's a good idea; however, in terms of my intent to summarize the topics in this forum (an X1 forum), I was simply attempting to create an index of those most discussed topics surrounding the camera as this forum will likely be the first port of call for those interested in purchasing the X1.

At the end of the day, this is something that should be achievable in a forum environment. The only limitation that I'm seeing surrounds people and not system functionality.

Either way, the 'noise' as it was referred to before has certainly put me off of the whole task. Thanks to those who supported the idea.
