shard Posted September 4, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 4, 2010 Got mine about a month ago. Great lens. I was told that I am one of the first in Osaka to get one. I maybe wrong, but I think the problem (or not) with Leica is that they are actually a very small company compared to Canon, Nikon and Sony and as a result, they do not have the resources to constantly produce all their products, instead they make them in batches. The numbers per batch are also small, probably in the low hundreds if that and definitely not in the thousands. As a result, you will see sudden stock surges of lens X or body X and then nothing for a long time. Unfortunately, that also means that for a new product, availability will be severely limited for the first few months at least as there is just not enough to go around. It is pretty much a lottery right now on which dealers gets stock.
Mark2 Posted September 4, 2010 Share #5 Posted September 4, 2010 How does it compare to summicron f2? I am thinking of changing.

Ario Arioldi Posted September 5, 2010 Share #11 Posted September 5, 2010 What are crons Summicrons, I suppose. Cheers, Ario
el.nino Posted September 5, 2010 Share #12 Posted September 5, 2010 Are you sure?Cheers, Ario of course: - cheaper - lighter - smaller (less viewfinder obstruction) - less distortion - better corner performance as long as one doesn't really need this extra f-stop I would always go with the crons. Cheaper, smaller an lighter definitely yes; quality wise it depend which cron you are comparing with which lux; in addition the summiluxes tend to have a different fingerprint, I'm not saying better, just different and it is a matter of personal taste not measurable with MTF charts. Mark2 Posted September 6, 2010 Share #14 Posted September 6, 2010 Why do people need an extra f stop? Is it because it will be faster when focusing moving things like my baby?
adan Posted September 6, 2010 Share #15 Posted September 6, 2010 Faster focusing, no. Faster shutter speeds under any given lighting, yes.
zoomstop Posted September 6, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted September 6, 2010 All, I own the 35mm cron and just sold my 35 lux in waiting for the new version for the 35 lux which is why I posted this question in the first place. Just my opinion: I prefer the compactness of the cron but the 35 lux is by far more superior. It draws the picture in a 3D kind of way. Just my 2 cents. shard Posted September 6, 2010 Share #17 Posted September 6, 2010 I find that with alot of the Leica lenses, the price does not mean that one lens is better than another, they are just different. The same is also true of different versions of the same lens. The newer one may not always be the better lens. Once again, it may just be different. tom0511 Posted September 6, 2010 Share #18 Posted September 6, 2010 For me f1.4 main advantage is (even) shallow(er) DOF fpr subject isolation. The speed for shooting in low light is still an advantage but IMO not as much as it was in film times (with todays high ISO performance of sensors). An the new lux's hood is as obtrusive as the crons' one... or maybe less for what I see. ciao
Seeingeye Posted September 10, 2010 Share #20 Posted September 10, 2010 According to my dealer who has been in contact with Leica on my behalf, the next batch of the 35 Summilux is due into the UK by the end of September. Better supplement that bit of information by saying that the September in question is in 2010, given the way that these things can sometimes slip.
